Hi Peeps.

I have been using unleaded petrol in my bike and i though it was super unleaded but it was only normal unleaded petrol. I have been told that my RS125 needs 95 Octane or above and standard unleaded doesnt meet this octane.
My friend told me that i should drain the tank and put some super unleaded petrol in or add some octane booster to the my tank right away otherwise the engine may run lean. Is this correct?

Regards to all

yeh, regular or "premium" has a 95 rating, super is 97 and lrp is closer to 99, although you kids with modern engines cant use lrp.
use super, you will feel a difference, or alternatively use a booster like silkolene pro boost or a power pill. do not use a power pill in conjunction with pro boost, it doesn't work, possibly becuase after a fair slug of pro boost its already 100 rating.

...most of the petrol stations should have the "RON" (Research Octane Number Cool ) rating on the pumps...I could swear that the unleaded pumps that I have used had "98 RON" written on them...but then again, I was probably high on the fumes at the time...Confused

Regular (Premium) unleaded should have at least 95 RON, unless you go to really dodgy and cheap merchants...

Hi

Normal unleaded is 95 RON (Research Octane Number), whereas old 4* and current lrp are 97RON. Super unleaded used to be 98 RON, and still is through most of Europe, but it is only 97 RON in the UK

Aprilia used to specify minimun 98 RON fuel, but they dont anymore. Not sure when they switched.

Using a higher octane fuel that necessary for a particular engine will not gain you any power at all

All the best

depends on the engine, i get a definate difference between unleaded, super, and lrp - top end is the same but accel is better and power is better.

Hi

Optimax claims to have a higher energy content. This is not the same as a higher octane rating. Unless your bike has a knock sensor, or is set up for a higher octane fuel there will be no difference to peak power or acceleration by using a higher octane fuel.

For example, my better halfs car has a pair of turbos, and using a knock sensor to figure out the level of ignition advance and turbo boost that it can get away with. It is noticable faster on higher octane fuel. On my old Alfa 33 P4 I have tried supper unleaded (it was only 1p a litre more when I was working in Belgium, so if you pulled up at the wrong pump you didnt tend to bother moving to the correct one) and it make no difference at all. My cheapo lhd 1.3 Alfa 33 was orignally set up to run on 98 octane fuel, and it runs noticeably better on super unleaded or lrp, but not enough to pay the extra on a tank of fuel!

All the best

Keith

Hi

Use lrp as that is 97 RON, and cheaper than super unleaded (dispite the fact that lrp is just super unleaded with an extra additive).

All the best
