I took my exhaust off my NSR 125 as when putting it back on found that the previous owner had sheared the thread. (I wondered why it came out so easy)

I cannot put a bolt all the way through as there is no access to the back of it. (RC valve is in th way). :?

So I'm stuck, all this and just after I passed my test. Havent even even taken it out for its first ride without L plates.

:( Is there any way of fixing this.

retap the hole/thread with the next size up mate,

basically go to a grage and ask them to do it unless you wana buy a cutting/trapping (whatever its called) set, probably be able to get them from places like halfrauds etc

basically its like a oversized bolt that you screw into the hole and as it goes it cuts a new thread (slightly larger than the original) then you simply use the next size bolt up to attach the exahuast

hope this makes sence (I tad tired)

Later

Hi Mate,
Unless you're doing it yourself I'd avoid retapping the thread, take it to your local bike shop / pet mechanic and get a helicoil put in it. This is a replacement thread which is screwed into the hole and allows you to keep the standard thread size Very Happy ... and it's cheap! Very Happy Very Happy
Good luck,

Hi

If the bolt has sheared off I presume that the remains are still in place. You can get them out, but I would be tempted to take it to someone with experience (after all, drilling it out is a tad risky when the drill will go through the surrounding allloy far more happily than through the bolt)

Essentially they will drill a hole down the middle of the bolt and then screw something like screw with a reverse thread into the hole. The trouble is that if you get it wrong the reverse thread screw (which will be made out of very hard steel) will shear off, and that will be a nightmare to drill through. Occasionally you get lucky and the bolt will come out easily after you have drilled down the middle.

All the best

Keith
