Kind of a continuation of my previous thread, but its about a different topic. I have a KH125, after taking it on a 40mile ride yesterday the bloody thing now won't start.

After it woun't start yesterday morning, I took out the battery, moved the fuel tap to 9 o'clock and kicked it a few times and it started. I then put the battery back in and took it for a ride, where it started first kick every time.

When I finished with it last night I turned on the engine cutt off switcha and shut off the fuel. Yet this morning after turning everything back on, the thing won't start again and smells slightly of petrol.

Any ideas?

Is it possible your flooding it?

When you first try to start it after a long time, leave the choke off and just kick it over, if no luck try the choke but no throttle.

The only time i have ever had to use a choke on any bike is the middle of winter.

At the moment the weather round here is pretty hot.

It could be,

So if I turn the fuel off and kick the hell out it, will that clear it? I didn't use any choke or anything to try and start it this morning, but it just wouldn't start, surely it wasn't flooded then?

I hope the engine cutt off switch isn't faulty. I turned it off last night. Though the switch seemed to work ok yesterday.

Im kind of thinking the carb is taking on too much fuel.

Do you twist the throttle when your kicking it? If so try not to.

I didn't twist the throttle at first, untill it wouldn't work.

I probably need to take it somewhere and have it looked at, but that won't be a for long time, since i'm skint and moving house.

In the mean time, I'll be happy if it starts.

Just had it turnover once or twice but then it cut out. Crying or Very sad

It sounds like you just havn't got the knack of it yet.

Each bike will have a different foible of how it likes to be started.
On my MZ I had to give it full choke and no throttle.

It certainly wouldn't start with neither. And once it started to fire, you had to get on the throttle to get it going. Then choke off, and control it with the throttle.

Do you know how to bump start? That'll most likely get it going. Stick it in second gear, run along with the clutch in, jump on and dump the clutch. (With the ignition etc on) and it'll most likely fire into life.

Tired to bump start it the other day, problem is sometimes without it actually on and running you can only select between 1st gear or neutral.

I turned the fuel off and kicked it some more, then turned the fuel back on and kicked it somemore, and eventually it started.

I rode somewhere left it for 30mins came back and it almost didn't start.

When I am leaving the bike for hours, should I turn the fuel off, or just leave everything as it is/was?

On older bikes I tend to turn the fuel tap off, on vacuum hosed fuel taps, I leave them on.

To get a bike into whatever gear you want while stationary just rock it backwards and forwards slightly whilst selecting the gear.

First gear is ok for bump starting, just not perfect.

do you know what type of plugs I would need and how much they are roughly? I suppose it can't hurt to have a spare.

You should be using choke to start it first thing, thats what its there for. Wink Without choke you could be flooding it, then you would need to open the throttle fully for a few kicks to clear the fuel and then start again.

You don't need to use the cut off switch either, just turn the key off and thats it.

Should tell you in the handbook, if not then just ask at the shop you get it from. They will know what you need.

Take the spark plug out and make sure its nice and clean.

General rule of thumb for two strokes to assist in easy starting.

ignition off, give it two kicks.

Ignition on choke on, give it a good kick and it should start.

'86-'98,K4-K7/K9-K10.........NGK BR8ES mines the 96 K-9

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I took the thing to training and left the hall 5mins early so everyone didn't take the piss when I couldn't start the thing. Took about 8-10 kicks and started. I think I'm getting the hang of it.

oh by the way I don't have a manual, thats part of the problem.

hmm been using techniques in this thread fine,

But recently the bike has been taking at least 6 kicks to get it going. The idle revs are also very low and it sometimes cutts out at junctions, leaving me looking like a fool.

I have tried adjusting the screw on the carb to increase the idle revs, but it doesn't seem to do a single thing.

Make sure you're not messing with the mixture screw.
