hi all, i set out to buy some oil for my VFR400 NC30 today at halfords. I was looking for a semi-synthetic 10W-40 engine oil. But when i got to the stand, there was either gear oil or engine oil to this specification. I was under the impression that engine oil was what i needed, but is there gearbox oil which is different to the engine oil? Meaning that i need to buy two oils-one for the engine and one for the gearbox?

Sorry if this seems a thick question, ive just never owned a bike like this before Embarassed

thank you

you were looking at car stuff. Cars use different oil to lube the engine and gearbox.DON'T BUY IT! Bikes use the same oil for both gearbox and engine.

Get Castrol GPS Semi synth 10W40. It's 25 odd quid for 3 litres and that will be enough. I've been told to avoid castrol R4 superbike, although I have never used it.

I wouldn't want to take chances with my oil esp. in a high revving 400 like the NC.

Just my Penny Coin Penny Coin

EDIT

https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10151&productId=222387&categoryId=53791

That's the stuff you want. 25.99 for 4 litres. Easily enough for an oil change.

It's not just R4, you want to avoid any fully synthetic oil on NC30's. It can cause problems with clutch slip with certain clutch plates, so it's best to avoid as you'll waste £35 of oil if by chance you do have problems.

I presume you are changing the filter and drain plug washer too as a matter of course? Halfords should stock those too.

I personally prefer to support my local bike shop than Halfords though. Prices are usually comparable.

They don't always. Honda reccommend you do, but I don't tend to bother.

I personally only ever use genuine OE filters on my bikes too, but that's just me.

Make sure you do the sump plug bolt up to the reccommended torque otherwise you may crack your sump if you overtighten it, or the bolt my vibrate out if you don't tighten it enough.

On a random note, oil filter tools are worth their weight in gold to get the old one off. You can get strap thingey's but I have never used them.

Another reason why I prefer to use my local bike shop, they put a new sump washer in with the oil filter everytime I buy one from them, so it gets changed as a matter of course.

They are only 10p or so anyway.

Remember to have the bike upright when you check the dip-stick level, otherwise you will overfill it if you do it whilst on it's side stand Thumbs Up
