Our student house had the bill in the name of the landlord. Bills went to the house, we paid them down the PO. Lost out on any direct debit discount, and ended up paying with coppers but no one had to have the money in their account.
Still had arguments over who'd walk the 100M into town to pay the fecker though...
Lived with people who'd put £8.67 exactly in for their share. Most normal people could put in £8.70, or even £9.00...

Give them 2 options.
Either someone else takes the paying over or you go to a token payment meter and they then each take turn at topping it up. AS has been pointed out, its going to cost each of them more. Also think about paying the bill quarterley. There is not as much saving on DD as many people think.
If everyone paid into a savings account each week, you may find that you actually make more interest than you save with DD.
Other than that i guess you could set up a seperate account to pay ALL bills and make them ALL pay into it via DD or they get evicted out of the house. ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

Kickstart,
That all depends on how well they have worked out the payments.
My current leccy bill on DD is running at a credit of £80+ and thats after the winter bills. Add in the fact they have also over estimated my usage, so i have plenty of fuel that i have paid for but not used...
Really makes you wonder when we have lived in the same house for 20 years added nothing new either gas or leccy that would use more, as most new products now use less fuel than old ones. How they can mess up so badly....
Or is it just a ploy on their part to boost profits.
Npower recently tried to double my monthly payments despite being well into credit on both gas and leccy. When tackled about this they mentioned about recent price rises, to which i replied what over 100% rise ? and the fact both acc were in credit. They then backed down and left things as they are......
I just wonder how many people never complained, thus resulting in them raking in more money a month which will produce a healthy profit for them.
Once i get the money back into my acc at the end of the year i'm going back to 1/4 payments in arrears, NOT paying in advance, and banking the same amount each month into a high interest acc. That way at least i will get the benefit of the interest into my pocket not theirs.
Soon make that £60 back at this rate. ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

£80 is not much in credit. Make sure you ring in customers own readings.
Consumption does increase and is factored in. While some modern stuff does use less electric, plenty uses loads more (all those people replacing crt TVs with large plasma ones for example, using loads of halogen lamps, air conditioning, etc).

Main reason to ring in with your own reading every quarter. Otherwise they haven't got much to go on really.

Price rises have been pretty high. Around 50% over the last few years on electric. Gas is even worse. Add that to generally higher consumption

Not profit at all. Merely money they are holding. Plenty of people in debit as well (very difficult to disconnect people these days, and token customers are nowhere near as profitable as they cost a fortune to run).

Doubt it. £60 at say 5% interest means you need to have about £1200 in there for the year, with that being the average. Paying off your bills each quarter you would have a consumption of double that to average it. Do you really use £200 a month? If so £80 in credit is only about 10 days worth.
All the best

They wouldn't be able to put more than one name on the bill.
I say cancel it and let someone else take the responsiblity.
Either that or get the name changed on the account. |

Can you not set up a joint bills account with your housemates, thats what I do with mine, just transfer over whats needed for all the bills into the bills account once a month.
