The RVF is an extremely good bike Very Happy

It's probably (technically) the slowest of the Honda sports 400s though, but has extra goodies (like USD forks, and smoother power delivery).

Viper and Ann can tell you about the CBR4. I personally think that the RVF looks the best out of the bunch, though.

RVF is bloody expensive for a 400. I read a review on the FZR400 vs RVF400 and the FZR won it due to much better lean angle potential and better handling. CBR400 and VFR400 are the cheaper Honda alternatives to the RVF.

great bike but if its a little out of your price range, just go the the NC30 still a fantastic bike, a little older, standard forks but still a good choice

Yeah, it's true that the RVF is the most expensive of the 400s, but that also means that it should hold it's value better. At the end of the day, you will be paying for a solid piece of machinery. Additionally, I reckon that the styling is more timeless than most other bikes...you only need to look at the FZR, VFR, GSX-R etc. to guess that they're from the early-mid nineties, but the RVF still looks very modern for that era. Although, having said that, I do appreciate that a lot of ppl still like the more classic looks, but not me Smile

hi
id go with the VFR if your going with Honda, it's about a grand! cheeper than the RVF for similar quality bikes, buying the RVF seems like a waste of money, but thats just my view, getting a decent VFR is better than getting a crap RVF Very Happy enjoy

ok probably a stupid question, and I haven't done my homework on this, but is the cb500 faster than a cbr or rvf 400? I'm guessing you probably cant throw the cb500 around corners like a cbr\rvf 400 right?

You could throw it into the corner just as quick, don't rate your chances of coming out the other side though Wink

Seriously though if you're new to bikes a cb500 would be more than capable of keeping you happy for a year or two.

£3300 for your first big bike AND a 400 is a LOT of money, you can get a top condition CBR600 for that.

Yes, but you've got to consider WHY the value of an older 400 is similar to that of a "top condition CBR600". It is surely a tribute to how well RVF/VFRs hold their value, and their attractiveness as "first bikes". 600s change spec and styling every couple of years, and even if this won't change how enjoyable the bike is to ride, it will affect it's resell value.

A 400 isn't slow! and to the average rider, it should be sufficient (performance-wise) for a while. One thing about 400s, however, is their size: anyone over about 5'9" may find it a *little* impractical for everyday use, although they are very accessible for a quick blast.

If you're a speed nut (an who isn't Wink), then you will get bored of a 600 as quick as you will a 400 (ask G Smile).

At then end of the day, if I wanted a first big bike for commuting and a bit o fun, then I would probably consider the CB500 and SV650(s) as well. They are both around the group 9/10 insurance mark, and equally as bullet-proof as the Honda 4s.

But it's a lot of money to spend either way on a first bike. Also 400s are a lote more prone to problems than larger bikes, so ure prolly gonna spend a good amount repairing it anyway.

As long as you buy 2nd hand you're not gonna lose much reselling any other 400 unless you knock up 10s of thousands of miles or crash it.

I didn't get a 600 cos of the insurence and the fact that a 400 can do the speeds i want, like 100mph cruising on dual carrigeways (if i have to). I also think as above they hold their value better than 600's as their 'evolution' has stopped, i feel a 400 was a logical step up as well from a rs125. As for comfort i have no problems with my bike and im 5"9 altho saying that it's not like i do any motorway cruising as im almost always on a/b roads with a bit of town cruising to the shops

p.s. I also lurve mole's rossi job, and will probly get the same or castrol honda when/if Wink i crash my bike

Well...I don't know what your idea of a "first bike" is, but it is obviously different from mine! Smile
(NSR aside) I wanted a bike that was fairly fast, reliable, and looked good!...oh, and a reasonable insurance group too (ok, so I'm still being ripped off there Sad)...I also wanted a bike that I wouldn't mind actually keeping...

But yeah, fair enough, if you only want a bike to thrash about on, and knowing that you will want a different bike soon, then £3k is a lot of money...
