suitable replacement

Hi , can any one think of a suitable Engine to fit in here ?

Around the 400cc mark , its just that the cost to fix the engine that all ready in it is not worth it , DO NOT try and say don't bother with putting a different engine in it , just say what engine is around the right size to fit the gap, I personally think that most twin 1980 engines will fit it , am I right in thinking this or not ? Also it will be my dad that sorts the engine brackets and all the wiring and carb issues out with it ect, so it will be done to a very good standard.

Not sayin diddly squat other than a CBR125 engine will fit until you at least post some dimensions of the hole I'm afraid...

Ring round the Breakers, Jamie. I would get the loom and carbs to go with the engine as I don't know if any parts are common to both engines. I would imagine they are, but don't quote me on that.

If you're going for a bigger engine, I'd consider uprating the front calipers too... eg: you're going from stopping 17bhp to stopping nearing 60bhp if you went with a CB500...

chuck a gs500 engine in it, air cooled so no bother with mounting a rad,
i would up grade the brakes,
if its any thing like the cb250 brakes..

The brake are not that bad TBH, will just service them and put new pads,oil and braided hoses on them.

Crav , what are the xs400 engines like , will they be big enough to pull me and my dad ? ( Me 15 st Dad 13 st)

Also will they go more than 50 MPH ? As thats all we got out of the 250.

They wont be adequate to stop the great increase in hp.

Not improving the braking is a short sighted problem, all the extra power is pointless unless you are able to stop.

Get yourself a nice big rat and a large hamster wheel. Hook a sprocket up to one side of the wheel and run your chain over that. Put that rat in and give it a swift kick - you'll be going before you know it.

About as much chance of finding a decent XS400 lump (the YICS version won't fit btw) as you have of going to the moon. GS500 might be an idea, cheap and plentiful although get the tape measure out first as the GS crankcases are quite long. And much though you don't want to hear it, I'm going to say it anyway -

The XS250 chassis is about adequate for the 250 / 400 engine when brand new. If you put a more potent engine in there it will be woeful, especially with those brakes.

I don't understand your perseverance with a bike that was a lemon from new, has little or no classic status, and even in top condition is a bit of a crap ride (heavy / gutless). By the time you bought say a GS lump, and sorted electrics / carbs exhaust etc you would of spent the price of a rat GS, which is an immesurably better device.

It's still possible to get an XS 400, there's one lurking in a breakers somewhere, all neglected and hidden under a bench just waiting for a new home. Trawl through the breakers pages in Bike Mart that comes with MCN.

It's a challenge, but one which could be just the job for Jamie to sink his teeth into.

At the end of the day BLUEX5 I have here a bike with a f_U_C_K_E_D engine that is worth NOTHING TO ME , so I might at least try with a different engine as I have NOTHING to lose , if the worst comes to the worst and I buy an xs400 engine or something and my plan does not work then I will just sell the engine back on to some one else, you never know that with the right engine and brakes I may well have a very nice bike, even a new restoration project for when the Ariel is finished, but on a much cheaper scale , you never know I might even have the PERFECT bike to have when I am 17 , after all they would be classic insurance , and a "funky" bike to own at 17 , yes it will be 33BHP safety Nazis's (sp?)
