Hi,

I'm new to biking (and this forum) and i've just bought an NSR and since new I have done 200 miles, I am having a real nightmare trying to get it to go into Neutral when I stop Sad . I've ridden the usual CG125 and an RS125 and they seemed very easy to get into neutral.
Are there any tips anyone can give me on getting it into neutral rather than second easily cos it gets to the point that at lights I just leave it in 1st rather than messing around? Has anyone else had the same problems?

Many Thanks in advance.

JF

With my bike (cagiva planet) I have to tap down from second to neutral when i am still moving. It won't go into neutral when i have stopped, so maybe you can just select neutral when you are rolling to a halt?

Thanks for the link. The bike has only done 200 miles from new so I'm hoping its just a teething trouble which when its run in will disappear. Fingers crossed and Laughing

I had a similar problem when I got my NSR, give it time and be patient - after a while (about 500 miles) it all seemed to loosen up and started clicking in and (touch wood) I've had no problems since.

That is really not normal!!!

Sometimes I get that on my NSr when I accelerate HARD through first and am a bit lazy with the gear change but it shouldnt be happening all the time, and especially not on the way down the box.

Try adjusting the gear lever if you keep hitting false neutrals, it may help that the lever is closer to your foot.

why do you go into neutral at lights? I thought your just supposed to stay in 1st so you can get away quickly.

My planet finds neutral without any trouble.

I agree with keen, I always hold the clutch in and leave it in first. However i believe the "proper" way to do it is to put it into neutral.

In the car test you are taught to put the car into neutral and put the hand break on when ever at any lights I assume its the same with bikes except without the hand break obviously...

I suppose so- I was in London this week and I noticed the lights there take AGES to change, up here they change really quickly generally.

In the car test now (my wife is about to take it) they actually let you sit at the lights in first with your foot on the clutch as long as you have the handbrake on!!!

Bit stupid if you ask me cos if you get hit from behind, you can stuff the gear box and endup in the middle of the junction!!

Its because learner drivers tend to take a while the get the clutch to the biting point and the revs set correctly, so if you find the biting point and give it say, 1500 revs, then all you have to do when the lights change is take the handbrake off and slowly let the clutch out.

Can you tell I'm having driving lessons Question Embarassed

There is a lot more to driving a car in my opinion, and although there is more driver input with all the pedals and gearchanging and everything, riding a bike is so much more involving, and a lot more fun.

I'm only taking lessons to keep the parents happy (they seem to think that when I pass my driving test, and that wont be long now, I will ditch the bikes and get a car Rolling Eyes

I feel lucky to have done the car test first then - does everyone who has a car and a bike think this way? (Car test harder than bike test)

I haven't done both, but my driving instructor said there are a LOT more technicalities on the car test, loads of things you get minors for, compared the the bike test

i have some probs gettin my rs from to neutral from firt at times
spray some wd40 on the shifter it will help a lot
also dont leave it in first all the time holdin clutch coz it will stretch the ass off the cable after time

if your getting false neutrals then dont be a pussy with the gear change, push it harder so you feel it clunk. i know this works on hondas, never ridden an aprilia so i dunno if the gearboxes feel so definate or not.

oh and dodd, i've started my car lessons too now. they really suck.

The neutral thing just sounds like a common thing with new gearboxes, it should vanish over time.

The fact u have to tap the lever twice to shift between 1st and 2nd could a bent shift fork I suppose.

What gearbox oil do you use? semi-synth and fully-synth may make a difference.

I did my car test almost 3 years after my bike test (and I had been riding a bike almost 2 years when I did my bike test). Car test didnt seem difficult, the worrying thing was that I passed, which made me wonder who else had managed to get through

All the best

Keith
