My brother has a GSX 750F 1991. Has anyone changed a starter motor on these? The issue is that sometimes it will start ok, others you press the starter and nothing. You then have to put it in first and rock the bike back and forth, then put it in neutral and hit the starter and then it'll turn over. Not a battery issue as charging ok.

Someone mentioned taking the carbs off, is that right?

When you press the starter and nothing happens check if the starter is getting power, it may be a simple safety switch like the neutral one preventing start up.
Who ever mentioned carbs off is not your friend.

He's tried bypassing the neutral switch by pulling in the clutch, still no joy. Also there is a 'click' sound. I had a similar thing on an old Vauxhall Cavalier, I had to tap the starter motor with the crook-lock on occasions as it stuck.

Also try jump leads from a car just to make sure you have the voltage (amps really).

You have to take the carbs off to get at the starter motor bolts if you need to change it.

Thanks but he has a replacement. It has not played up much today, if you stop the engine via the kill switch all appears good next time you start it. If you stop the engine with the key it's 50/50 if it'll need the rocking motion to start, sounds electrical. That's my best guess.
