Slightly fudged rivet link

Hi,

I've just changed the chain and sprockets on my bike and it seems i was slightly over zealous with the riveting tool. The heads of the pins have split slightly where they have been "squashed" in too much. Is this going to be a problem? It still "looks" like the side plate has no chance of coming off.

I have ordered another link just in case. Bit of a pain really, it was probably done right the first time but i went back and gave the pins another good seeing to as i was paranoid they hadn't been done enough.

I would say that so long as the side-plate is pressed-home fully you'd be ok for normal riding. If you're going out for a good thrash I'd be thinking twice about that.

change it, soon as you can, having a chain fly off is not a pretty sight

Thank you for the replies. Its ok, the bike isn't being used yet. Im getting it ready for summer at the moment, so ill change the link when the new one turns up.

the chain has tension appled to it and very little torsion if the wheel is aligned properly, so even if the heads of the soft rivets are slighty split this shouldnt be a problem as you are not trying to twist them off

I was thinking along the same lines myself but if i don't change it I'm only going to worry about the thing, and if it did let go, well that would be kinda crap and i wouldn't be able to blame someone else.

I posted really in the hope that loads of people would say "don't worry about it, i always do it" type thing, but as there is even a hint of doubt ill change it.
