Alot of us have work and time pressures and live in the North which is a ball ache as it easily adds 700 miles
to a European tour, changing a tour like Maurices 2000 mile European tour into a 2700 mile tour and thus
1-2 heavy mile munching days ontop of the 4 mile mile munching days.to get to say central france and + 700
miles of petrol + wear and tear to factor in.

My thoughts are this how about us Northerners have a go at the semi foreign country next door , ie Ireland?
Dublin Via the south coast to the Ring of Kerry is supposed to be a fantastic ride though the road surfaces
are a bit shit, its reasonably close £60 on the ferry to cross over and a good 450 mile round trip with multiple
piss up locations (this is Ireland remember), which is fairly easy not tooo far from home and could be done
fast over a weekend with a Liverpool (or ride to Anglesea) set off after Friday work, say 7pm , ride to the
ferry take it, have a fantastic piss up in Dublin , sleep , get up all hung over then ride down to say/ Wexford
maybe even Cork, repeat till Limerick hammer the ring of Kerry a few times , then cross over quickly to
Dublin to get the ferry back?.

Any takers?

also anybody been there I have heard from Stink's stories the roads are a bit rough , but probably no
worse than Snake pass.

(my current work issues are preventing me going anywhere too long though this has yet to be decided)

Ta

I've thought a bit about it too, tales of road surfaces kind of put me off a bit though. It'd be more of a cultural/scenic tour than a sports one I reckon.

Btw, that 2100 mile tour I did (I think your talking about my first one) was from Wrexham, still 300 miles from Dover, not much less than you.

About the best thing living in the South East is the proximity to France Razz

No problem for a sidecar outfit Whistle

Wait till you see how much stuff I can fit in my sidecar, then you'll be converted.

Might be picking a VFR800 up next week so I might be up for this!

Although I don't want to be flinging it down the road as soon as I get it on a crappy road surface, how about Scotland instead?

The road surface is nowhere near that bad in the north, south is a little interesting though. Besides, them VFR800's love that stuff. The only reason to see one of those in the ditch is if the rider put in the wrong inputs. Smile

Yea Irish roads suck loads, but you can do that trip on main roads wich are perfect, just don't use the back roads and you will be fine. Most back roads are covered in pot holes so if you don't know the road you will be in a ditch very quickly.

Go a chat with come lads on CBR250.com and they would be able to tell you what stretches of road to take and which ones to avoid

I toured Ireland in a car back in 2003, and it was excellent fun. I took the Swansea-Cork ferry (which was then Superferry, but I gather they sold that, and forgot to buy a new one!). Drove from Cork - Waterford - Dublin - Galway - Killarney - Cork, spending at least one night in each. Killarney is a great base to explore the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle peninsular. Absolutely stunning scenery (although of course, it's not Norway - sorry, in-joke).

I can't remember much about the roads, except: people move out of your way onto the hard shoulder when you come up behind them; the signposting is really awful (and in what I think is called the Gaeltacht, it's in Irish); and while the speed limit signs were in mph, the distance markers were in km - seriously, although I hear they've changed this, a couple of years ago now.

Great people too. Of course the easy cliché is that they're all wasted. I'm not one for stereotyping, but they were all wasted! After 6pm, you'll struggle to find someone sober out in Killarney. That said, I was as bad. Very good fun.

Only problem is the weather. It chucked it down for about an hour every day, preceded and followed by scorching sun. Very strange, and could make kit selection a bit tricky. Oh, and Irish cuisine is pretty limited.

However, all things together, it was a great tour.
