Hi
A grinding noise is normally the sign that they have gone beyond worn out and are now down to the metal and wrecking the disk. Check them yourself to ensure there is friction material on the pads still, and if no do not ride it (you will have poor brakes at best, until the point the backing gets hot and welds itself to the disk).
Normally pads have a groove down the middle and when it gets worn down to that level the pads need to be replaced.
All the best

My YBR was due new front pads after just 2,500 miles (I bought the bike at 1,800 and they were already pretty shot). I dunno what the person before me had been doing as the replacement pads were hardly scrubbed in when I sold the bike 2,000 miles later...
One useful indicator for your front pads is the brake fluid level. As long as it has not been topped up you should be able to gauge brake wear by how much the fluid drops. Obviously as the pads wear away fluid is required to fill the excess space behind the pads.

The front brake on my YBR needs servicing too and I have done 5k miles. The fluid is generally at the lower mark and has been for a while. But sometimes it goes up again which is confusing. My brake grinds too or it sounds like the is something touching the disc while the wheel goes around. The braking performance doesnt seem any different though.
I really need to get it looked at but I dont have the money. ____________________ Current: MT-10, Bandit, Grom, GPZ500

I am on my 2nd pair of front pads at 13000 miles. I changed them at about 7000 miles. The rear drum is still fine Not even past the half way mark yet. No drop of fluid at all but I bleeded them and replaced the fluid recently anyway.
I've found if you rely on the front brake mostly, the pads will wear really quick. You can trim fair amounts of speed off with the rear drum without locking the rear wheel with it correctly adjusted. I sorted someone elses YBR a while ago and he managed to wear down to metal within 2000 miles. |
