Hi

No, no generic units. It controls the ignition timing, and the timing will vary between different engines depending on loads of factors (eg, compression ratio).

Hi

Maybe. There are aftermarket ignition units used to play around with the timing to get slightly more power (at the expense of needing to use high octane fuel, and removing the safety margin before you suffer from detonation). However these are generally not direct plug in units.

For normal use most people would just fit an igntion advancer.

As cdi units don't fail that often (few bikes are exceptions) then most of the time you can pick up a 2nd hand one for reasonable money.
