If I take my gear leaver off, turn it 180degrees and put it back on would it become 1 up 5 down ?

My gear lever is only one spline btw, it does not have linkages ect. .

Cheers.

If that woukd work I can see some tricking of family and friend's coming along .... Twisted Evil

Commonly done on some Japanese classic racers (noteably CB350s). They fit rearsets then flip and shorten the gear lever so it a) reaches and b) Gives 'racing change' which is indeed up for down and down for up. This allows changing up at silly lean angles where you couldn't get your toe under the lever and also makes it easier to change up when the front end is lifting.

If you do it on your normal bike, you won't be able to reach the gear lever unless you move the footpegs.

I've done this by accident on the divvy when I was doing some DIY work on the bike. Didn't really know what I was doing, just took some tools to it, took it apart and slapped it back together.

Took it for a spin around the block to make sure it was ok and I couldn't understand why the bike kept screaming at me as I went up a gear.

Got back to the house and realised what was wrong. I left it like that for a day or so because I was too pissed off to try and fix it there and then, and to be honest it was kinda cool. Something nice about slamming your foot down to speed up.

It's how I've got it on the MZ.

Rearsets, and just put the gearlever round the other way. It is not a laugh, it's a right pain in the arse and feels very very wrong.

I wouldn't bother.

It's often done to race bikes.

Doing it to other people's bikes - if they realised, but had to use the bike then so rode it as is - it could get very dangerous, as you just need to forget for one second coming out of a corner and knock it down a gear rather than up to see you locking the rear up as you're starting to come out of a corner.
Not good.

Seeing as its on a spline with no linkage, no it wouldn't work.

A mate of mine had some weird 125 suzuki a long time ago that was all down, i kept putting it in neutral when i tired to change to 2nd, much revving of engine and paddling ensued.

Just re-read your post, you wouldn't be able to shift gear as the bit you put your toe under would be facing the engine Very Happy

Jamie, just realised what you meant, putting the shifter on as in facing backwards, In my demented mind i read it as just rotating it through 180 so the toe bit was facing inwards Very Happy

Sorry m8 my mistake.

Boring old fart comment here...

as i see it your much more likely to need to slow down in a hurry, last thing you want to be doing is fumbling for gears when your engine braking desperately trying to slow down.. this maybe doesn't apply to most of you with them new fangled working brakes but if you've ever ridden a heavy bike with woefully inadequate brakes, or a cg125, then you'll understand.

I know what you mean mr.z, the front disks on my CBR were well warped, so I didn't like using them so generally it was engine breaking, locking the rear coming into a corner became a nice trick lol,
