 |
|
When you tell people you ride a bike nearly all of them say "ooh, that's dangerous". And mostly, they are right. Fair enough, there's the chance of wrapping yourself round a tree or ending up under a bendy-bus, but it's the hidden dangers that always surprise me
Number 143...
Taking my helmet off this morning, the chin strap whipped round and hit me in the eye. Bgger me that hurt
Had to start a meeting with one red teary eye
So next time someone tells me riding a bike is dangerous, instead of telling them about the time I got SMIDSY'd, or the time I threw myself down Donnington park, I'm going to regale them with how I nearly lost an eye
Anyone got any other unexpected dangers of motorcycling? |

Pretty low down on the list, but recently I was making a ramp to get my bike up a couple of steps into the shed and I mashed the end of my finger with a saw. |

Sat on the bike, wheeling it backwards out of the garage just yesterday, and got my leg caught between the rear of the front peg and a box of waste wood and metal.
My foot was pushed forwards by the box, and my shin was pushed backwards by the peg.
Thank God for m/c boots with shin guards
EDIT : Big Pete beat me to it on this one
Another incident was some months ago just after I got the bike - I'm on the right hand side of the bike, kneeling down to check the oil level thru the sight glass. The bike is on the side stand, so I reach up and pull the handlebar so that the bike is balanced upright and level...
well I pulled the bike past the balance point until it just about fell on me, so I'm kneeling on the floor, trying to push the bike upright and can only hope that no-one saw ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

Whilst cleaning your bike, pushing a sponge inside faring etc only to find theres a sharp bit (ie end of a spring) and it goes down the inside of you nail. When retreiving the finger quickly finding that you've splattered blood over your nice clean bike (ouch) ____________________ Prev CBR600RR (06) Orange/Black

#78 long-term prostate problems
Getting all kitted out in leathers or more accurately a one piece, gloves and helmet only to realise that you do indeed need to answer the call of nature.
Here lies the conundrum, do you
a) Go and have a number 1 (or worse a number 2)
b) Try and forget about it and leave for a ride anyways hoping not to get a tank slapper on the fit to burst testicles.
c) Just relax and let the warm trickle warm your cold legs as the heat from the engine will soon evaporate any residue and overspill.
The problem leaving it until you finish your ride or get to your destination is that you start the stomping of the feet as you stand before the toilet and the gloves get flung off in a flapping motion whilst hands fumble at the zip.
Not good
This problem is especially prominent during the winter months with the excess layers being wprn under the leathers. ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

#187.
Cleaning excess oil off chain with bike in gear & engine running. Your rag gets caught up in chain and drags your hand in resulting in fingers crushed between chain & sprocket.
I've never done this one myself, but have heard of countless people who have.
#193.
Warming engine up so you can do oil change. Go to remove oil filter and touch downpipes.
Never done this either, but witnessed the same guy do it several times. He never learns. |

number 259, walking up to your bike, swinging your leg over your bike. Only to pull a muscle in your bum cheek its still sore now.
Stopping at traffic lights and getting your pants stuck on your peg and almost going AOT.

trying to fix your mirrors while sat on the bike, droppin a small part of the mirror, reaching down to pick it up off the floor and burning your arms on the downpipes.
I did this yesterday. Ouch. |

#26 - Having a very large and exceedingly angry wasp fly down the neck of your jacket whilst riding and sting you repeatedly across the neck, chest and armpit.
#27 - Whilst riding in hot weather in a T-shirt, having a bee whack into the bend of your arm and then sting you on that soft and sensitive area.
This is made worse by a) the knowledge that you suffer an allergic reaction to bee stings b) the fact that you can still see the sting sticking out of your arm, merrily pumping more poison in, and c) the fact that you are in the middle of fast moving traffic with nowhere safe to stop whilst you pull out the offending sting.
#28 - Riding through a swarm of midgies with your visor slightly open.
#29 - Digging out your winter boots and finding a dead spider in there. Eeuurgh!

The trim of your lower faring hitting a squirrel decapitating it and the trim snapping off and whipping your leg with allot of force, just above where the boots stop onto your combat trousered leg, because proper ones are in the wash and its a hot day.
concur with #1324 its hard not to feel a bit stupid laying under your still running bike with people watching as you squirm about too confused to do anything un-squidinabuckett-like ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |
