Hi,

I need to get a pillion helmet that actually fits people with with small heads on my bike.

So, anyone know anywhere i can pick one up for a low price? I think £40-50 inc. delivery?

Ebay?

Remember that fit is very important for protection.
Accepted that you don't have to wear a helemt in a car, when riding a push bike or as a pedestrian. However definitely pay extra-attention to your riding if your pillion has sub-standard protection.

Nitro Thumbs Up

Mine was a £40 helmet and stood up to a couple of years of heavy abuse, getting the shit kicked out of it, and then a 40mph faceplant into the kerb. Very highly recomended!

yea, at the moment when my GF goes on i let her wear my nice Shoei as fits her better than the pillion helmet ive got at the moment.

I just need a nice fitting small helmet and then i can have my shoei back!! Were planning on going to bath on it (~175miles) so need a comfy helmet for that.

Go to your local bike shop, try a few on, then have a look online and see if you can find it cheaper. Ebay is probably a good place to start, can't think of anywhere else at the moment.

Shoei helmets fit me very well. Nitro helmets do not fit me well.
Measurements don't equate to fit.

I got my second hand shoei off ebay for £40 or so and it handled my last (and most serious ever) crash fine, not even a head ache after.

I can vouch for that helmet being pretty spot on.

I have seen first hand how well it works when I decided to headbutt the concrete. Sad

The mrs has one for when she comes on the back.

Only problem is they tend to steam up whenever the visor is fully closed so I rode with it a few mill open but in all honesty you get this with most helmets. Thumbs Up

Why has it got to be a cheap one?
If it's financially viable wouldn't she just be better off with a more expensive one that may last longer? I just replaced my shark one with a £100 KBC helmet, and can't praise it enough! (AND it comes in pink!!)
Unless of course you are buying it for yourself to keep for any pillion, are a little strapped for cash, or have other reasons. There shouldn't be a problem with Nitro lids, I know a fair few people who have had a few 'off's' whilst wearing them with no problems Laughing

Lozzypop1: Wondering why people think pillions should have to make do with 2nd Hand gear.

If you can hang on 'till their next 'motorcycle special', those Lidl ones are not bad if a little on the heavy side. A steal at £25. They're TÜV approved so safety shouldn't be an issue.

beacuse often the pillion helmet only gets used a few times, and the rider rides more carefully with a pillion, so less risk, so the pillion helmet doesnt have to be as good as the riders one

Eh? Are you on drugs or just stopped your medication? That has got to be a joke? Accidents happen, doesn't matter how careful you are. The same amount of risk as when you are riding without a pillion.

PLEASE explain how you figured that statement out?

You maybe at the same risk from other road users, but almost certainly less risk from yourself doing something stupid. Unless of coarse you don't give a shit about the passenger.

I agree with Col to a certain extent. When I'm by myself I do stupid overtakes, 100+mph daily and generally annoy most road users.

In 24 years of riding I've had loads of accidents, but have never had a single one with a pillion. My pillions are either the missus or the kids and I will do everything in my power to ensure they are safe, even sticking to the speed limit when necessary.Wink

M and P or the fastone were doing a cheap Nitro for £20 and some box helmets for £30ish. I used one for a few months without any problems.

You can be careful as you like but its "the other person" that will get you.

I had to get a battery for SWMBO's car, I was going to go on the bike but she wanted to tag along so to be "safe" we went in the car. On the way back a silly bitch hit us head on and on my side of the road. I couldn't have been more careful, but the accident still happened though.

So don't take risks with pillions safety, its just not worth it.

So how do you define risk?

My Missus was 8 months pregnant when we travelled to Rosenthal to visit friends, roughly 900 miles each way on an old XJ750. I spent most of the journey literally sitting on the tank.
Two wheels can never be safer than four, but that's not the point is it.

Risk is something you take as soon as you do anything at all. I am just saying that buying a cheaper helmet for a pillion as there is less risk as you ride carefully makes no sense. If an accident is going to happen its going to happen. Just because you ride carefully doesn't mean you avoided one. Its being at the wrong place at the wrong time that will decide if your going to have the accident. . . . If that makes sense. Confused

I can't argue with you tbh, but I think you can sometimes go over the top with the 'what might happen' approach rather than just get on with it.

An accident is exactly that, an unplanned incident. How do you prepare for everything that may happen on a daily basis?

no accidents dont just happen by chance

the more often you ride, the more likely you are to have an accident, the more carefully you ride the less likely you are to have an accident

the riders helmet will be used more often and at higher speeds so its more important that its of good quality, as its more likely that it will get used to protect a head from hitting something

unless the rider only ever rides with his pillion and rides no slower with his pillion

if you roll a dice enough times, eventually you will get a six, so the more times u do something, the more chance u have of getting a partiuclar unlikely event

Shocked

If you were to have a accident with a pillion on , most of the time they come off worse . wearing a cheap helmet is not going to improve there chances is it .
