They're only legal if they let a certain percent of light through (can't remember the number)
I read in the MCN a few months back that Police are going to be a lot less strict about them, but you still hear about people getting done for having them. I used to have one of the mirror finish inserts, and now i've just got a proper black visor, never had any bother with them, been pulled twice and nothing was said. ____________________ Banned till April 2011. |

Under current legislation, motorcycle crash helmets must conform to either BS6658-85 or the new European Standard of EC22/05. However, visors are still required to conform to BS4110 XA, YA or ZA and must allow at least 50% light transmission.
These rules apply regardless of whether it is being worn by the rider or pillion, so even though a pillion has no control over the riding of the machine, if they are caught wearing a black visor, then they will be guilty of an off an offence in the same way that the rider will.
Black visors only allow 18% light transmission, and we thought about 18 months ago that that we (BSI technical committee on visors) would get the legislation changed as there was no evidence to support some of the facts being provided by the Government, in fact quite the contrary, there was evidence, and quite a lot of it to support a change in legislation.
Unfortunately, the Transport Minister of the day, decided for the first time ever not to go with the BSI recommendations.
Motorcycle goggles however, are by law allowed to only transmit 18% light, which contradicts current rules, and it is this area we are working on currently to get black visors legislated for in our favour.
| Quote: | Note that a mirror finish insert is actually legal |
They are legal to wear, but illegal for a dealer to sell them as a result of a fatal accident in Northampton about 3 years ago.
It was found as a result of this accident that light transmission was down to about 4%, and colour recognition went right out of the window, and when tested this applied to amber, black, irridium and blue.
A dealer and the manufacturer were taken to court by Trading Standards resulting in fines to the amount of over £30,000 being dished out.
So far the regulations regarding the sale of inserts has not been relaxed.
| Quote: | Get pulled over by the police for wearing a tinted visor, and get a ticking off (thats pretty much all they can do)? |
Wrong, read my earlier comment.

I guess that goes for those of us that wear normal glasses too? |
Apart from taking your eye out, there have also been many reported cases where the arms of sunglasses have entered the brain through the nasal cavity causing severe brain damage, and in some cases death!
As a by the by, if the tinted visor is legal, i,e it conforms to BS 4110 XA, YA or ZA, then it is still legal to wear at night or when it is dark, but not recommended. ____________________ It is better to arrive 30 seconds late in this world, than 30 years early in the next |

If you wear a full face helmet an accident which pushes glasses through your face would probably be unsurvivable anyway.
Although there are instances of this I would guess it is exceptional.
There is far too much shite on t' Internet these days..
(A 200 pound pair of Oqulies would do as much harm as a pair out of Poundie's)
And if you need glasses to read a number plate at the legal distance you would be illegal without them anyway and I would refuse to ride with you. (Maybe ) ____________________ W-ireless A-rtificial L-ifeform L-imited to O-bservation P-eacekeeping and E-fficient R-epair |
