as im just starting out in the 2 wheel world i got my hands on a 2001 nsr125r that needs some work doing to it, it needs front fairings, screen, clocks and a few other things
but my first problem is getting it to run, it turns over fine on the starter button but thats it
is there anything on these bikes that would make it fail to start
what should i be checking?
like i say im new to bikes so any help would be nice

thx in advance

Check plug, coil and HT lead...Have replaced these three in the past...

May also be the side stand switch...

check if your stand is up . if it's down, as soon as you engage a gear , the engine will stall

adjust pilot screw at 2 1/2 turns out
start on choke let it turn until the engine begin to stuff , apply a slight acceleration and take choke off , keep it running 2000-3000 rpm until the temperature needle enter the white zone , release handle then adjust idle at 1500 rpm with the idle screw (the one with the spring)
if you cannot do that , i recommend to clean : tank (tap) , air box foam and carb . obviously a new plug is mmuch better

Aslong as it's in neutral, can't see how side stand switch would effect it.

Take your airbox off, put your hand over the carb and try to start up. You should feel fuel passing over your hands.

That confirms fuel is through the carb as a start.

You could take your carb off and remove your reed block and check the reed valves aswell.

If the bike turns over fast enough, checked battery with multimeter ect..

You can also try bumping it off, that'll rule things out if it does or doesnt go.

Obviously make sure youve got fuel and a spark(you've done) first before anything.

Have you checked the kill switch?

It's amazing how many people (including myself) overlook this.

It's trying to start, not electrics.

If it's starting, fuel's getting to the engine, might be shit in carb.

is there compression in the cylinder? take out the plug(put it on the floor so you dont shock yourself) put your thumb over the plug hole and press the starter if you feel nothing your rings have gone. if you feel like your thumb is going to be given a love bite... stop! you've got compression.

failing that i dont have a clue, other than whats been said in the above posts.

if you've got a nice blue spark and fuel line ok , no reason to do not start . try a new plug otherwise it's may be the float valve which is stocked
