About the speed of the bike, it shouldn't matter too much.
On my practical test route I wasn't physically able to go above 50mph, otherwise it would have been dangerous, as the area I was in was narrow and very very twisty.
If your bike turns out to be quite slow then you can always use one of the centers hire bikes, they normally don't charge more for this (it was included for me).
Look in the yellow pages or on google for a motorbike/cycle testing in your area, you should find a couple of companies. Call them up and they will book training and a test for you, then you need to go the dsa website to book your theory test.
Just tell the test center you want to do your A2 and they will give you all the advice you need. ____________________ Past: 55 Sym Jet, 91 ZZR250, 03 NSR125R. Present: 97 ER-5.

Confusing isnt it.
The A2 is the restricted license test. So once you pass you can ride like was said, any bike, but it has to be restricted to 33BPH output
Any bike can be restricted, even a superbike. Some take it better than others
Once 2 years are up, it automatically gets upgraded to a full license, and you can ride anything unrestricted.
The full license is only available if you are 21 years or older.
This has to be taken on a bike that has a power output of MORE than 47BPH. Once passed you can ride any bike, with any power output
The only tests you need as you are 17 are:
CBT, this allows you to ride up to 125cc with max power of 14BPH (ish) This runs out after 2 years, and has to be re-taken
The Theory test. This is a classroom test, 50 questions, and then 14 hazard perception questions where you click the mouse to identify hazards. You need a CBT to sit this. This is valid for 2 years after the date you passed
The A2 test. This is a practical test, and is your riding test. Once passed you are restricted to 33BHP for 2 years, then u are unrestricted. To take this you need a valid CBT and Theory test certificate
Costs vary, but as rough figures:
£90 for the CBT
£30 for the theory test
£60 (£70 at weekend) for the A2
It is advised you take some lessons for the A2 for your riding methods. You are taught to pass the test and be safe on the roads.
Couple of ways you can do this, 1 is to just book riding lessons with an instructor, and when he says you are ready book the test and away you go
Or, you can do a 3,4 or 5 day course, which is the test fee + 3,4 or 5 days training. These are about *£400??
