Well the original battery that came with my scooter is shagged (many years old and it's never been used), a replacement only costs £25 but I've literally no use for it as I don't mind kickstarting it, so I'll never use the leccy start.

However, at idle the headlight is quite dim and the indicators won't flash at a constant rate - I've tried turning up the idle but the point at which things start to work properly is the point at which the bike tries to 'creep' forward if the brakes aren't on. So I'm assuming the alternator is quite weak.

Is there anything I can do about this, apart from buy a battery which I'll never use?

That's because your bike was designed to work with a battery
so that all your electrics work at tick over put a new battery in it

Er.....You do use it. To power the lights and indicators and all other electrical things on the bike. As said, if it wasn't needed they wouldn't put a battery on it.

There's no battery required for the MOT, but if the lights don't work it's probably a failure.
