Basically, i went ahead and brought a small luggage set and think its just too small Embarassed . I have put it on the bike and think I'm never going to fit everything i hope to.

For start the tankbag is tiny, as are the panniers and the tail bag isn't going to fit a tent like i hoped.

A photo:
https://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d20/andy13_uk/DSC01154.jpg

Im thinking i should have gone for the slightly bigger set and know im going to have to pay about £10 in postage to replace and another £5 to get the bigger set but do you think this would be wise?

Its for a 10day UK tour i hope to do and don't want to have no space what so ever!!

So, my question? Have gone too small or will i be surprised how much i can fit in this set? (i don't want to start playing around with it too much in case i decide to send it back). Im hoping to travel light but need to fit a few sets of clothes, tent, sleeping bag, few tools, few small bits and bobs

I'd go for the bigger bag since you're taking a 10 day trip. Are you taking a back pack as well?

I've got a back pack that can fit 60L of stuff and it only cost me 40 quid delivered.

Joe Rocket Blaster if you're wondering by the way, I can do the weekly shopping in that bag and still have some room! Plus it's handy for carrying a spare helmet, etc for when I'm picking people up.

If you can fit the tent, sleeping bag and such like on-top of those, I reckon it should be easily ok for 'travelling light'.

Andy, that's the Oxford 1st Time luggage if I'm not mistaken, I've got the strap-on tank bag (because I have a plastic tank) and at 16L it's good for carry my sarnies, some fruit, my work trousers and a few bit and bobs. I know hind-sight is a wonderful thing but personally I'd have gone for their Hump-back Sports range particularly as you have such a fine looking bike. To be honest though I think you'll struggle to get anything more than a 1 man (1-2Kg) tent in a tail-pack anyway, the Oxford Sports one only goes to 42L expanded. A cheaper option might be to buy an Ortlieb dry sack from Hein Gericke and lash it across your pillion seat with bungies, well this is what I do with my sleeping bag and multi-mat.

The bags are in the Hein Gericke catalogue but not on the website so here's a link to someone elses site. HG part no.s 34312000120, 34312000110, 34312000100, 80/60/40L £21/16/12 Thumbs Up

I'd probably go for the bigger one, purely based on the fact that you can never have too much luggage (until you get to the point that your engine feels underpowered and you can't filter because of the width Laughing ). I think the panniers are the same as mine, and they'll take a surprising amount even before expanding them. A bigger tank bag would be good though, because it's a great way to take plenty of stuff without it intruding into how you ride. As for the tail pack, I always found mine surplus to requirements (so much so that I gave it away). They're not really big enough to get a tent in properly, but are big enough to get in the way of where the tent should be. I just mount the panniers so the top of them is good and flush with the line if the seat, the use that as a flat surface to strap the tent and a few other bits to, using the d rings on the panniers to secure the bungees for the tent, and on those panniers the d rings are easily strong enough to strap the tent solidly.

Yea, the larger set has the expanable one (48 litres). Mine are 40 and non expanable (though not much difference in size.

Ive just emailed them so hopefully. I still have plently of time Thumbs Up

I spent about 3 weeks in France last year armed with Oxford's Humpback set - i already had the tankbag, so i bought a tailpack converter and a set of panniers. I've found from personal experience that i don't like to use a tankbag for any great distance - i find it just gets in the way too much, especially if i'm on the motorway for any length of time.

I cargo-netted on anything that wouldn't fit in the luggage, but kept all my valuables in a hefty bumbag that i could remove and then leave the rest of the luggage on the bike - if anyone was so desperate as to nick my unwashed pants, they're clearly very down on their luck and need our sympathy.

Anyway, to get to the point of this post, blatant photo-whoring by a Gixer owner........

If I was you I'd get some sort of rack that you can bungee the tent/waterproofs/airbed/water bottles to. Gives you a lot of extra space and you can get cargo net your leathers on there if it gets too hot. I couldn't do a camping tour without one.

Bungee cords and a cargo net Thumbs Up

that pic is a weeks worth of light packing to tour southern france and northern italy.

when i tour, i dont like anything infront of me, or on me, it gives me the illusion that the bike has no luggage and i can also move around for alp rapeage and kneedown fun.

Shocked But they both appear to be the same size

These are the Oxford first time luggage, as far as I know they only come in one size. The pictures on both ebay items show the same panniers and the same tailpack, the tankbag may or may not be different depending upon what picture is true for the second set.

Those panniers, whilst not the largest, will still be very useable. I'd recommend taking the tailpack off and maybe attaching your tent etc in a roll pack and bungeeing that on.

They are simular, but the tank bag is MUCH bigger and the panniers are also expanable on the bigger set. The tail pack in the same though, which is a shame Thumbs Down

The expandable panniers youre getting should be about the same size as my oxford ones:

https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b282/primmy/IMG_6386-1.jpg

https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b282/primmy/IMG_6390-1.jpg

The little tailpack you have, should be alright to hold like a camera, your waterproofs, a drink and torches/tools etc Razz

I have the set that you have sent for, and the panniers are massive I managed to fit a weeks worth of clothes (minus a couple of pairs of jeans) with a pair of trainers in easily. The tank bag is also big, especially when you expand it, you can fit a helmet inside it if you want to.

But if you were going for taking a tent/sleeping bag/roll mat etc I'd just stack it on top of the luggage. When the rear bags are fully loaded and bungeed tight they are quite sturdy.

https://w2.bikepics.com/pics/2007%5C07%5C25%5Cbikepics-973534-800.jpg

That was my NSR when I went away recently. The helmet stayed in place which I wasn't expecting (put a bicycle lock through it to hold it up just incase Wink). I reckon I could have bungeed a tent on one side and a roll mat/sleeping bag onto the other.

Looking at the pic reminds me I should really try repair my fairings at some point..

I can't believe you spent £65 on that rubbish. Neutral

Still, all is not lost; get yourself down to Hein-Gericke and get a 30-40L (they do bigger) roll-bag for about a tenner.

Then bungee it down like a good 'un. Thumbs Up

Mine cost £6, is waterproof and held enough for 9 days camping.

Simple solution, get smaller camping stuff. I can get my tent and sleeping bag into my 30 litre top box with room to spare.

Its pretty much the same but the tank bag is expanable and so is the panniers.

Also, big Thumbs Up M&P who didnt charge me the £5 extra for the set up AND for postage. The guy on the phone was like "so they will be with you next couple of day, so its all good". I even mentioned it and he said dont worry!

Also, got a tent and thermal sleeping bag for £28, which is thought wasnt too bad!

Eeep, I just bought the same kit. I can only see the Tankpad is bigger though, I dont think i would like too much on the tank anyway getting in my way. The panniers on the second set up say they are 8L bigger but they look identical :S

Another vote for dry-bags and bungees.

A sports rack is worth having.

Or maybe even two drybags.
