Well ive just left a mates house after spending an hour in her dads garage looking at his RD250. All immaculate and original. Verrry nice bike! (well I liked it anyway)

I didn't leave until midnight and yes, it was F**king cold. I had to wipe the frost off my viffer before I rode it. lol

I set off, kept the revs super low until I was out of her area as
a, VERY loud pipe
b, Engine was still cold

Once I made it to the main road, engine temp was reasonable, So I raised to about 8k gear changes.

Hit the link road and I gave it some beans, And the bike was pulling my arms out of their sockets so to speak. Front wheel was skimming on gear changes. VERY fierce!

Pulled from the lights, Gave it a wiff of clutch and the front raised gracefully from around 5k rpm (Has NEVER lifted under 10k before)

I was very impressed.

Will dynoing help the bike run like this all the time do you think?
Could it be that the new race can is causing it to run lean/rich on a normal day. But with the icey cold/dense air tonight it was aiding the bike to run better. lean/rich?

I came home with a grin on my face either way

I had this now and again with my CB-1 when i had it, but can't really remember what the circumstances were when it happened.. Thinking

It's ace though when it happens isn't it, like you said i always came home grinning from ear to ear thinking "i love that bike!" Laughing

In answer to your actual question.. I've no idea Thumbs Up

if your bike runs better when cold, and then gets worse as the temp of the outside air or the bike increases then your bike is running rich,

which is kind of odd since you have changed your exhaust, which normally leans it out slightly,
sounds like the bike needs a good tune

here is a guide to lean and rich carb conditions
from motorcyclecruiser.com

Typical Lean Conditions:

- Poor acceleration; the engine feels flat.

- The engine won't respond when the throttle is snapped open, but it picks up speed as the throttle is closed. (A too-large main jet also mimics this symptom.)

- The engine runs hot, knocks, pings and overheats.

- The engine surges or hunts when cruising at part-throttle.

- Popping or spitting through the carb occurs when the throttle is opened. Or popping and spitting occurs through the pipe on deceleration with a closed throttle.

- The engine runs better in warm weather, worse in cool.

- Performance gets worse when the air filter is removed.

Typical Rich Conditions:

- Engine acceleration is flat and uneven and loses that "crisp" feel.

- The engine "eight-strokes" as it loads up and skips combustion cycles.

- The engine's idle is rough or lumpy, and the engine won't return to idle without "blipping" the throttle.

- The throttle needs to be open continuously to maintain acceleration.

- Black, sooty plugs, a sooty exhaust pipe and black smoke from the tailpipe that stinks of unburned fuel.

- Poor fuel economy.

- The engine works better when cold. Performance falls off as it warms up or the ambient temperature rises.

- Engine performance improves when the air cleaner is removed.

When its cold the air density is greater, so you get more o2 per cm3 of atmosphere, just like in nitrous oxide /// theres a greater density of oxygen, or when your in the himalyas your bike might not even run, down to the lesser o2.

It could be shitty setup but its something that affects allot of bikes (two strokes especially it seems from here, but then maybe its just more noticeable) every winter theres posts up allong the lines of "its funkin freezeing but my bikes going faster" because you get a more efficient burn you get more prod.

Maybe worth haveing it dynoed and set up right if its really that noticable you might be running rich, or at least check your filters e.t.c.

edit: yep your quite right, think its time for sleep!

From the guide there are symptoms from both. Confused

The main ones I notice are.

Pulling away from traffic lights, its very underpowered until the revs rise above 4k It pulls away as slow as cars. The NC29 on the other had ripped your arms out! Laughing

Looking at the temp gauge it does appear to be running hot. Or Hotter than the NC29 did.

I get pops on over run

Runs shit hot in cold weather Thumbs Up

It really is noticeable. It was like riding a different bike tonight.
