is it possible to get these separate from the cylinder head ,
or second hand or are they matched to the head and have to be to gether,
the thread on the ones on the gs are in not good shape and i have had one helicoiled already and i see another is going on its way, causing the bike to leak oil from the camshaft cover

not the bolts but the cam caps , as i want to replace them and not tap them/heliciol them all , was told that i would need a new cylinder head, as it is a set,
holds the camshafts in place and the those bolts screw in to the top of them and hold the camshaft cover down and seal the head /tappet cover , the part that is between 4 and 5 in this fiche note it does not have a part no and they are letterd a , b , c and d

Thats the rocker cover... he wants the camshaft caps. Wink

The camshaft caps form the top half of the circle that the camshaft sits in, and has treaded parts that the rocker cover bolts down onto.

No they are unique to each cylinder head as they are line bored with the head as one piece.

Hi

As above, although they are also unique to their position on that particular head.

All the best

Keith

Hi

Yes. If those caps are damaged beyond repair (or you do not wish to repair them) then the head is scrap.

You can helicoil them (the rocker cover bolts should not need to be that tight), or I have heard that you might be able to get over size rocker cover bolts and just tap the threads out to a larger size.

All the best

Keith

Hi

Normally the torque required on those cover bolts is pathetically small. Hence there should not be much stress on those threads.

All the best

Keith

I once got some repairs done to a set of camshaft caps after discovering some monkey decided not only to fudge the threads but also fudge hele-coiling them. Brick Wall Brick Wall Brick Wall

I also enquired, like yourself, about replacing them; only to be told they were unique to that particular camshaft. Mad Worse still, one had split due to severe abuse.

I found a place not too far from me that builds trikes and 'one-offs' and the guy welded one up for me as well as fixing the rest with a combination of metal inserts and hele-coils. This time done properly, mind. Very Happy

To get four done cost £80 and took him a week because he was already flat out on other stuff.

So it can be done. Thumbs Up
