Where can I buy bikes that are insurance write offs?

Basicly my Austin Mini just isn't fast enough, so i'm going to shove an r1 engine in the front. I'm after a crash damaged r1 as a base to start from, as im presuming it will work out cheaper than buying everything I need to do the conversion.

If anybody knows of any for sale, or of how to get hold of insurance write off's then that would be greatly appreciated.

Try eBay, Biketrader, Gumtree and local breakers yards.

Not sure how but maybe you could cut out the middle man and go straight to an insurer.

I would suggest joining a Mini forum before going out and buying an engine. Take some time to read about others' conversions.

I know a guy who is into his Minis and looking at his work I'm not sure how suitable it would be to drive the front wheels with a bike engine when you have to factor in steering etc too.

If you're lucky you may be able to find something on eBay. Have you thought about getting a 1275GT Mini engine in there? They can put out a fair bit of power when tuned.

A mate of mine bought himself a Z car recently but he went for the Honda V-tec rather than the R1 engined one. They are very fast but not much left of the original Mini chassis and are super light. They sell seperate kits for fitting bike engines but you'll need deep pockets. The 1275 conversion sound like a better idea to me.

There's a guy called Malc that runs Yorkshire Engines - worth doing a Google search for him

He gets rave reviews on the kit car forums I frequent

Not had dealings with him personally other than to enquire about some rubbers for my R6 throttle bods on the kit car and he was V pleasant and helpful

Hard to get good deals as a 'punter' on such things - better to keep an eye out for non-recorded accidents or ones where the owner has kept the bike and is sticking it on ebay or similar.
Could always try and find a damaged turbo GSXR if you want a decent improvement over stock Razz
