The English government want to make it a legal requirement to stay at school until you are 18. Just England, the Scottish parliament has binned the idea.

This will apparently solve the problem of people leaving school at 16 without qualifications.

"Mr Balls (the education Secretary) said the new age limit would be enforced by a "robust regime" of support and penalties including spot fines and court action.".

So, there are quite a few 17 and 18 year olds on here. Get back to school or face a fine? Or maybe you're still there anyway?

So there'll be people leaving school at 18 with no qualifications instead? Great. Since you can marry at 16 (and have kids), will there be creche facilities? Maternal/Paternal leave?

?

So they will just leave at 18 with no qualifications instead......

Is that not already in place for the upto 16 age group anyway....

Talking to other parents at work, quite a few of their kids left school last year at 16 with dam good grades and could well have stayed on, but decided that they had had enough of education and wanted to get out and earn a living....
Seems they decided that going to work at 16 puts them in a far better position that going onto uni and coming out with a large debt and no job.... If they work at it they will be earning far more than the uni grads, have the experience to get even better placements as well.

What is the point of keeps kids at school when they do not want to be there, as all they do is disrupt the ones who do want to learn.

No wonder these kids are not taking education seriously.

Why force kids who dont want an education to stay on at school at our expense, the country needs unskilled labour as much as it need doctors and solicitors.

Seems pointless and unworkable.

Totally pointless, needlessly nannying and - as mentioned above - is a blatant attempt to massage the employment figures.

The courts system is currently creaking under the strain of real crime, why burden it with yet more new 'offences'? Oh wait - they probably won't, they'll simply devolve more court powers to unelected mong officials from the local council.

All I can see it doing is keeping the kids who don't want to be there disrupting the education of those who genuinely want to learn.

But this will eliminate the need to bribe^H^H^H^H^H support kids with EMA, and provide a new tax in the form of fines, if it's enforced hard enough.... Rolling Eyes

Don't worry, there'll be plenty of pensioners still needing to top up their income.

Thats a bad idea in my opinion. School was always hard to get by if you were trying to achieve as there would be a lot of kids getting in the way of that who didn't want to be there.

6th form was good because those who we're interrupting a lot, or jsut didn't want to be there, weren't there, so you can learn better.

Uni is even better as you don't get any problems really, well in my experience anyway.

I think 6th form would have been a lot harder if I had to be there with the low lifes I got stuck with in school..

bollocks idea in my opinion.

i have chosen to stay on and complete my a levels becuase im not qualified enough to do the job i really want to do (pilot). I go to 6th form in the biggest school in warwickshire and the majority of them are scrotes who i dont want to ever have to work along side!

It was good to see 99% of those scrotes drop out after GCSE's and pack off to mcdonalds and burger king!

It has meant i can get the teaching i need to complete my a-levels well! with all the scrotes here i would not be able to get the same tuition.

Then there is the problem there is not enough college's/ sixth forms to hold the masses of chavs, what are they going to do, have inadequate teachers teach a-level topics and see the results fall dramatically? because i can gurantee you the majority of the people who actually left and got jobs virtually failed their gcse's, and without gcse's you cant go into "further education" so whats the point?? they will be at school forever!!!!!

Scotland have been getting it right. May be tempted to skip just over the border if it continues.

Kids should start school much later, like Japan, and finish much earlier if the kids and parents want. Maybe like at 14, but they would have to do an apprenticeship during that time or something? I haven't thought it through... just typing and seeing what comes out.

They wouldn't be able to claim dole though. You go to work or do a worthwhile qualification. A fat lot of good a HND in TV & Video production done me.

I think dole should be wiped out completely, ok, some people have kids to look after and mum's often take years out of work...but was it not their choice to hav/ keep the child in the first place? and is that not what child benefit is for Confused

NO no , the dole should be kept but with 2 caveats ,

#1 there is an ABSOLUTE limit of 3.5 years max, this puts a ticking clock above the heads of people

#2 You can only take out if you've put in al la the Malaysian system where effectively the government keeps track of your contributions,

Thus for people who are down on their luck for a short time it acts as a safety net which can't be lived on,,

but hey if there was no dole the government would spend 121bn less , which effectively means income tax would cease to exist, and only consumption taxes would have to be inplace, ie VAT.

Most education is pointless and just a way of sorting the wheat from the chaff.

So just making more people stay on, doesnt make them all as good as the people who now stay on.

Its the same with university. A retard who has gone to university, is still a retard, and university is going to train them but its only worth it if the training is useful.

A degree used to mean something but now loads of people do bullshit ones so it means nothing.

None of the jobs i have done have needed any qualifications.

I wasted years of my life in education when i could have been earning.

Getting everyone to a minimum standard so they can read, write and do simple sums would be a good idea, as many cant, but otherwise, educations is only useful if it has a purpose for a particular job.

That makes it better for the kids who aspire to becoming a dole bum, at the moment its not possible to sign on as soon as you leave school as the minimum age is 18 afaik.

So it'll mean more ppl leave school and go straight onto dole bum seekers allowance. Thumbs Down

This government needs eradicating they're too full of shit ideas

Thats all dependant on the degree though, I'm doing robotics, there is no way I could have walked into that career after my GCSE's or A levels, there is a lot of training involved and thats where the degree comes in.

Although I will agree with you there are a lot of pointless degrees out there, much like there are pointless A levels and pointless GCSE's.

But education is helpful, just depends on your career path as to how helpful.

Well Education Leeds is toying with the idea of removing 6th forms from schools and it would appear making these go to collages built for the purpose of purely 6th form learning... Good idea i'm not sure as Education Leeds is a privatly (non profit) run concern founded by one P Ridsdale and run by his old bussom buddy C Edwards....

While i can see your point about the ones who are not interested in even turning up getting out, i also know the filp side where many who could go on and do 6th form and Uni have decided to jack it in, and get a job as they see it as the best way forward to get where they want. Many now see Uni as causing nothing but debt and then the whole trauma of trying to find a job, when if leaving at 16 they, if they are that way out, will be in a position were they will be far better off, no debt, good wage and proberly in a position where they will be hiring the so called elete comming out of uni......

I think far too many now see 6th form and Uni as just a means of putting off the enivatble of going and getting a job and having to work for a living.
Yes i know many going to Uni are doing so to better their chances, but with all the silly degree's these days that are no use in the real world....

Has anyone actually read it?

it is a brilliant idea you stay in education till 18 unless you have a job/apprentiship. It stop kiddies dropping out a 16 and going striaght on the dole.

government + brilliant ideas are incompatible,

here is a challenge think of 10 good things the government has done in the last 10 years,

I'll gun down the obvious BoE independent = lie BoE is still treasury's puppet as shown by Northern Rock

Economy - good conditions and chinese imports supressing inflation which should be about 10-25% now without them.

Whats that got to do with the price of fish? (don't take it literially and moan about fishing tax or something)

All I'm saying is I think it is a damn good idea, what does that has to do with history of government decisions.

what about the kids for whom education is pretty pointless. my son can read and write very well, but he is not academically gifted, so further education would be pointless for him, are they going to make more apprenticeships available for the kids who wish a more hands on approach in life rather than text books?

College has worked well for myself & my eldest daughter, but it is not for everyone.
