I've pretty much made up my mind to trade the bike in for a camper-van. There are a bunch of reasons, for anyone who's interested...

I've become kind of bored with the bike. There're only so many days one can tear up the highway before it starts to become 'more of the same'.

Law of averages...loss of licence or life.

Selfishness...a camper-van is something the wife and kids can enjoy (and they're pretty excited by the idea), whereas the bike is a ME...ME...MEEEEEE jobby. It's weeks out & about in the van, going places, and the family having a blast too, or me on my own having a blast on the bike while the family does the same old beach routine.

Plus...oh yeah...trips with the lads to the continent. Beer, drugs (aspirin for headaches, that kind of thing), toys (metal-detector, air-rifle, BBQ). You know the kind of thing.

I've had three good seasons, one on about the best bike money can buy, and made a new bunch of very fine friends (who'll be coming on some of the trips hopefully) so I can't complain.

And, in the final analysis, one has to give it up sometime. I'm 47, how much longer should I be hooning around like somebody half my age? My kids are nine and five and I'm missing too much summer with them.

So blah blah blah, that's where I am right now. The bike will be going up on Ebay on sunday, but I'll post it in the ads section so somebody here can have first go if they're willing to pay the price.

That is all. Laughing

Know how you feel, Ive pretty much gone down the same route, but a small car not a camper van. Insurance runs out in February, bike will most probably be gone then too. Just focusing on passing the car test first.

Good luck to you Hetzer, I did this when me and the missus split but that was through necessity. I lasted three months Mr. Green

Everyone quits at some point, some through necessity, some through a personal choice but your license will always be there, should you need it.

Thumbs Up

Sorry to hear that Siggi. I've tried giving up bikes in the past but i just cant do it, i get withdrawl symptoms.

You could always get a bike thats cheaper and much more challenging to ride fast, and get the camper van too. My MZ is a heap, only does 80mph and cost me a couple of hundred quid. Never fails to put a smile on my face though.

Or get a classic old 1930's BSA or something. Getting 40mph out of it will be a serious challenge, without the licence danger.

Zen Dog

P.S. I thought you hated Ebay? Adtrader, Biketrader etc. are alternatives...

I'm with you on that one.

That's why I'm sticking with the 250 as the speeds are usually lower.

I'll be keeping it as it owes me nothing and although I probably only do 1-2000 mile a year I couldnt bear to part with it.

2005 was my first bike for nine years. I've ticked a few boxes over the last three years, including some good track time on the RRW. I can't see myself going back into it later with a smaller bike, this Blade was the absolute ultimate and there's no going down from that for me.

I've pushed my luck, been incredibly selfish (god bless my wife) and I'm nearly fifty anyway. I guess it's a kind of shifting of the life-gears.

And if I'm honest I'm sick of putting the bloody tent up. Laughing

Hi

How about an old toy. Some 70s bike with far more engine than chassis. Something to polish and yet something that scares the hell out of you long before you get to the speed limit?

All the best

Bloody hell, I didn't see that coming!
What you need is a nice little (or maybe not so little) crosser to play with. Not too expensive and will fit in the back of the camper for when had you've enough family time on your hols.
Hurry up and buy a crosser and I'll see you down the chalkpit on Sunday.
Thumbs Up

That's the only bit I disagree with. I'm only a few years behind you age-wise and my biking is still only really getting going. I have every intention of keeping going until I physically can't anymore....... Smile

It's your decision and I'm sure you have thought it through etc cos I can't see you being the sort of bloke to make a decision like that rashly. In my opinion there is so much more to riding than just high-speed hooning, and I can't help thinking that maybe you haven't explored the other facets. Not recently anyway. But meh, good luck with the sale. And the camper van.

shit man, didnt think you were going to be turning it in after buying the blade so recently.

Good luck and i guess it is just an expensive luxury, ive been toying with the idea of having time off myself (though completely different reasons).

Hope the sale goes well and hope to see you on a SE social. Thumbs Up

Don't be a gaylord!

Fair enough though mate, I understand.

How about spending some of the money from the Repsol and getting an offroader? Mike has one, I'm about to buy one, Rob is planning on buying one, Davo has one.

fair play.. I can see the attraction of a camper if you want to do some serious travelling. I'm less keen on them for just short trips tho.

Why not chop in the blade for soemthing smaller that you can strap to the back of the van? handy for nipping to the shops or something when you're parked up somewhere

Sometimes you just have to give it up, the crosser idea sounds good though.

At least you'll still get a weekend ride in the camper Wink

'king hell I had to read that twice! Never ever expected that!

As much as I'd like to laugh at the idea of you swapping a bike for a camper van (ok well I did giggle a little) I can understand why.

My uncle did the same thing after owning the ZX10R, though he had a caravan & a bike at the same time.

Decided that after seeing his brother killed and that he has 2 kids and a wife that it was time to get a slower bike. He now has a Tiger which he goes touring on and he cant really go mach 10 everywhere as he did on the 10.

I dont think you'll ever give it up, bikes are in the blood so to speak. Get a crosser or something to do up and sell on or polish to death.

You can only do what is right for you, can't see me ever wanting to give the bikes up but you never know whats going to happen.

So, Splitscreen or Westy? (It's got to be aircooled)

See you on VZi?
