The rear drum brake on my Cub seems to have an intermittent problem - occasionally (well, about once a day on average) when I put the brake on it makes a horrible 'Grinding' noise, like when you try to put a car into reverse when it's moving. If I let off and apply it again, it doesn't make the noise, and it doesn't seem to affect its stopping ability - overall the rear brake seems quite effective.

Pray tell, what could the problem be?

Well, it might have a stone or something in there.

The shoes sometimes wear unevenly too meaning only the front part of the pad touches down on the drum. This can be cured by putting a slight chamfer on the leading edge of the pad using some sandpaper.

Given how a C90 has a quick-detach rear wheel which takes all of 2 minutes to remove, I'd suggest you whip it off and have a look.

Could be a touch of water in the drum. Wet brakes slip but damp brakes can grab and judder.
