Hi,
I've currently got a perfectly adequate "for a car" Tom Tom one, which I have no problems with at all.
Anyway I've found this American site https://www.mountguys.com/category_s/78.htm
And they supply mounts for bikes for my GPS and others.
Anyway has anyone got experience of using one on a bike?
Was it usable? Did you use a headphone? Was it okay just to quickly glance? What happened when it started raining ie how quick to get off and safe.
I know I'll probably have to set the route before I set off as gloves will be problematic/
To be honest at £25 all in (Thanks to the poor American economy), it seems a good price. I'm okay with the electrics and have a switched relay already that could power it. ____________________ I've a twin and a 4. |

If they are ram mounts your talking about yes i have, there very very good for the price.
To wire it in just run it off the pilot light wire, its switch and more than adequate to power both your gps and the light. Its also up the front, you will obviously still need the 12v adapter.
The mount is all well and good but unless its the rider your going to have problems when it rains, which being the uk, could be at any time whatsoever, lack of clouds or otherwise.. tbh i'd not be happy at all rideing with it uncovered, you could mash up some kind of plastic bag to go on it to protect it, but it'll be a pain in the arse to use, you'll have to refit it every time e.t.c.
I got a garmin gps3deluxe recently for £70 off ebay, mount wasn't much.. just a thought. ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

My Ram mount on my Rider V2 was abit of a pain to fit but finally got there. I love the Bluetooth headset and the features it allows me to do like take calls and listen to instructions clearly. I can get my GPS off in seconds and plnnaing routes is easily done with gloves on suprisingly. I dont noramlly use the head set just have a quick glance to check if im on the right road.
Ive just got the mount for the car for it and thats very good aswell.
Try these https://www.ram-mount-uk.com/index.htm ____________________ 2005 - 2006:Peugeot jet force 50 TDSI (sold)

If you want a Sat-Nav for both then I'd suggest looking at the Garmin stuff. They're more ruggedised and designed for use outdoors and on boats. I've got the (very) old Garmin StreetPilot III and it's a brick but suited for use on the bike. I'd also give a big thumbs up for the RAM mount kit. Good stuff that does exactly what it says on the tin.
Also FWIW gpsw.co.uk often have clearance and reconditioned Garmin kit on offer and they can also supply all the RAM mount stuff. I've also found them helpful if you 'phone or email with any questions.

You can get handlebar bags as well, spotted them on Hein Gericke as i am looking to do exactly the same as you.
That one hasnt got a clear plastic pouch on it, but one must be around somewhere that does, just a case of hunting one down.
Looking down at the tank seems to be a bit awkward, at least on a CG125, but down at where the handlebars are is a lot easier, as you can still see the road
if you find one, let me know. ____________________ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've had a garmins for a while
etrex
III
III+
i3
and now
Streetpilot III Deluxe
All of which i've used the same ram mount for, (although modified) to fit each one.
If you don't mind the brickisness (and it really is brick sized and with the batterys in weights similar) of the IIID, its fully waterproof (can be submerged) the address entering can be fiddley, and recalcing is a bit on the slow side compared to newer ones, but appart from that its pretty damn good, voice works as well as any out today. ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

i use an old HP sat nav which is fine in the car.......i pop it in my top pocket with earplugs and the listen only works just fine....
i once used the sucker bit and stuck it to fairing.....woeked well until i got on motorway fast lane and the mount snapped because of vibration....riding one handed whilst trying to catch a falling sat nav then holding onto it at 90mph aint that much fun ____________________ past - er5 - sv650s - drz400s - cbr 600 - gsxr 750 - lambretta gp mugello

for bike specific satnav mountings try https://www.gadgetguy.net/ good quality kit, that mounts onto the yolks see the photo gallery for mounting ideas.
i`ve got 1 on the way for a zumo (Mk1 bracket and mk2 mounting for zumo), but at around £90 it ain`t cheap but it is quality.
the other issues of using car based satnavs on bikes are the 1`s that have been said previously, and problems with water proofing (inc moisture in tank bags/map pockets) and vibration, that will literally shake stuff like PDA`s to bits ____________________ I accept no responsibility for swearing, drinking, motorcycle riding or your pregnant teenage daughter. |
