Bike due for a service come the end of this month, and the back tyre is past it, so will definitely need replacing. The front is a different manufacturer, and would probably be ok. Is it worth replacing the front at the same time so I have a matched pair? Will it make the slightest difference? I've got Pilot Road 2s on order with the garage, and I was thinking a matched pair would be better than a mixed pair. It's likely I'll be sticking with the tyre type for the forseeable future.

As ever, all advice welcome...

It's VERY important that your front tyre is stickier than the rear.

Why's that then?

Some tyre combinations seem to work. On the other hand I didn't like the feeling of a Pilot Power on the front with the Pilot Road2 on the rear. The PP had sharper shoulders and with raising the ride-height made it tip-in very quickly. The PR2 front have a rounder profile and feels nicer on the roads. (Not if you wanted to quick-flick through a chicane Wink )
The only downside to the PR2 is the michelin man logo in the chickenstrip area. I've managed to wear his face off but his body remains. Those last 3mm will be the death of me. Thumbs Up

2 random things about the PR2.
A thin dark line will appear on the front.
The leading edge of the tread will raise slightly towards the end of it's life.

If you do go for matching, keep the old ones.

So how would I get a sticky tyre to work? Ride it quite fast. Won't help me in most of my riding. Won't stay sticky for long enough in cold temps.

Really, why? I mean, I get that braking will ultimately all be on the front, but why does it have to be stickier than the rear?

my tyre supplier has never asked me what's on the front when hes sold me a rear.

Does he not care about me?
