You need a tool called an impact driver.

If you don't have one of those, a bit and brace is also quite effective (an old fashioned drill brace with a screwdriver bit in the chuck).

Giving them a good soaking in penetrating oil is never a bad plan.

I've always found a good spray of Loctite freeze n release helps with those real stubborn bastards.

And like stinkwheel says, an impact driver.

Also it will help after giving it a good spray to find the right size screw driver and give it a couple of good tap this is normally enough to free up a stubborn bolt.

Oh yeah, and don't put them back in again afterwards. Replace them with some socket head cap-screws (the sort that take an allen key) with a thin smear of copper grease on the threads. They'll waltz out next time you need to remove them.

Putting semi-burred crosshead machine screws back on motorbikes comes second only to joining wires with PVC tape on my list of things which make me want to repeatedly hit someone with a claw hammer.

Well, it's tasteless and pointless but it can easily be peeled off or painted over. I wouldn't have it on my bike and I feel free to openly mock people who do as trying to replicate traction engine pinstriping but it doesn't make me angry.

If you find that you screw driver bit slips put a bit of valve grinding paste on the tip, it will give you a better grip on the screw head.

If you find the screwdriver bit slips, put it back in the box and select the one that is the correct size and type for the screw you are tryi8ng to undo.

Importantly, learn the distinction between phillips and posidrive.
