As I cynically expect the new test is nothing to do with safety but to reduce the numbers of bikes on the road by making impossible and pointless tasks in the tests.

As bikes provide technical difficulties for road pricing plans that are going to be rolled out add 5-10 years and there will be far fewer bikes on the road.

This puts us into cars which = more fuel = more tax + road pricing victims

To be honest I think the people at the school may have been exagerating a little, or just completely talking out their Shocked Shocked Shocked . There would be no need for anyone to ride at an exact speed; there is no real life situation in which you need to do so. Also I doubt they would make the test that dangerous (the swerve part), the bike schools would sure get through some bikes with all those crashes Confused

I've heard (again from a school instructor) that it is some offroad training, with things like more complex cornering/handling, but I couldn't back that up either.

What I do know is that the price of the test will go uppppp!

Thumbs Up

From the DSA site:

Quote:
What is different about the new motorcycle test?

The new EU standards set extra and more demanding special manoeuvres that must be included in every practical motorcycling test. These new standards include:

at least two manoeuvres being carried out at slow speed, including a slalom
at least two manoeuvres being carried out at higher speed, of which one manoeuvre should be in second or third gear, at a speed of at least 30 km/h (18.6 mph) and one manoeuvre avoiding an obstacle at a minimum speed of 50 km/h (31.1 mph)
at least two braking exercises, including an emergency brake at a minimum speed of 50 km/h (31.1 mph)

https://www.dsa.gov.uk/Category.asp?cat=405

EU bullshit at its finest if you ask me Confused

These won't come in until october so luckily i just avoid it by one year Very Happy

Bit stupid if you ask me, how is doing a swerve on the test going to help at all. When someone pulls out you have no time to think you just react....which is swerving away. So they are just making you do a basic instinct not a skill Confused

its not off road as in up the fields on a c90.
its off road as in a controled area, tarmac and cones with no traffic.
also the swerve test speed (from what i have read) is an average between 2 points.50kph(31mph) isnt out of the ordinary.
its to see if you can actually control the bike(change line mid bend)and not just tip it in and hope.
the slalom and figure 8 willl be the hardest for most people.
and while i do feel that making the test harder for bikes only is a little unfair.
all driving tests need to be made much harder and you should have to pass one at least every 10 years.

the cone spacing for slalom and figure 8 is apparently a bit tight.the slalom on cbt could be done in a canal barge you get so much room.
but they give you a load of room for the u turn on flat tarmac, mine was done on a narrow street with a hill.still easy though Smile

yep that is exactly what i ws told by my intructor too! he showed me a map of the curcuit and you have to be going round a bend to be building up the speed before they use a hand held speed gun to make sure you hit the target aparently the local guy that was explaining the test fell off and has his arm in sling as we speak Shocked so if even the top dsa bods cant do it then new riders have no hope!

Will try blag a copy of the route and put it up

needless to say there shall be and has been many objections to it from the trainers!

I completely agree.

The skill of being a good rider comes with practice and time riding. No on or off site training will prepare anyone for jack shit. Knowing you have to stop is completely different to not knowing and having to stop in an emergancy. After all, you cant practice having to deal with shit car drivers. Its just a way to prevent or make it harder for new riders.

Im all for preventing accidents, but sometimes shit happens and I dont think its just new rider/driver inexperience thats to blame. Its just typical that in order to prevent the accidents and increase 'safety' they have to incorporate something into the bike test, when they probably should address the fact that cars pull out on bikes. Not the other way around.
