ok, well booked my test for march and i'm now shopping around for some 400's as at this time of the year i could find a bargain!

I was set on the kwak 250, but after reading a lot on it it just doesn't fit what i want. I want a bike that i can just go to college and back on (7 miles each way) and also to go out for a hoon on the weekends.

250's don't have enough power as i'll be taking pillions a lot and using the motorway so i think a 400 is a good step up from a geared 50cc Smile

Problem is, which one? i've narrowed it down to the CBR, VFR and RVF although im partial to a bit of fizzy Wink . I'm leaning towards the RVF atm as it looks lovely! and theres more of them about in good cond.

I'm looking from around 2-3.5K max and not an import either.

Thanks guys, any info would be greatly appreciated Thumbs Up

Jack

In the grand scheme of things, they are all pretty similar bikes.

I wouldn't limit yourself to just Hondas and would just look out for what seems to be the best value bike in this area that you can get for your money.

Personally, I wouldn't be spending that much on a 'first big bike' - a £1k bike will do the same and you won't lose as much if/when you drop it.

But i will be restricting the bike to 33bhp if that helps anyones input in any way Thumbs Up

what 600's would people reccomend? I don't want a bike thats too powerful, although it will be restricted it must have slightly more torque than 400's?

I can trust my right hand, but it's the weight of the bike aswell, im sure i'd get used to it, but a 50 to a 600 is quite a big jump restrictors or not.

Seriously I hate people who are scared of power.

Bah.

Stick to your girly bikes.

And gotta love the 400 riders excuse.

I gotta work harder to make it go faster, so its more rewarding Laughing

I was looking at 400's... The problem i found is that VFRs and RVFs seem to be quite pricey for one in good condition, because they are rather sought after...

And the CBR is just as bad.

For the same £££, you can get a really nice 600cc+ bike. So why not?

LOL i laugh at you! 400's are a good bike ree, we knows u dont like them but everyones different, seeing as hollis is young i doubt an insurance company would want to touch him. plus there the whole power problem too, hes only used to a 2 stroke 50.
I love the whole 600 riders excuse, "it goes faster" and? You live a long time, theres plenty time to ride a 600. Whats the rush?

What a stupid thing to say. They're good to start off on. At least he's not being a complete idiot and going off and buying a 1000 with no experience and killing himself or more likely someone else. And anyway, they are more rewarding(on the road). There aren't many places you can use a 1000 to its full potential other than on a race track. I plan on moving up the bike ladder the more experience (and money) I get, and anyway, they aint slow, and performance wise the'ye not all that far away from a 600, which I believe you have?

A-ha.

400's weigh more than a modern six have less power by about 40hp and the handling is down to the rider.

I would more than happily show you up Thumbs Up

More rewarding, ell oh ell.

And I can use a 1000 on the roads, but I do love a gix 750 to hoon on Wink

And Ben not only does it go faster, it makes your penis bigger.

Big bikes are for riders who can't make small bikes go fast. Thinking they can muster the performance capabilities of anything over what a 600 is capable of on the roads is just delusional - or they should think about getting into professional road racing (who even have to hold back on the bigger bike classes). Not even Ghostrider can use what a 1000 has to offer on the road. He's a Youtube video laugh at dodging traffic, but was pretty average around the Nurburgring.

My advice would be to opt for the NC30. The RVF's spec aren't that far removed, just a refined version (lacking the original's purist design imo) and can be picked up a lot cheaper.

Don't dismiss the unfaired 400s too such as CB1s and Superfours. Nearly as much performance, suspension can be sorted just as cheaply (a worthy upgrade as most would have tired and old shocks by now) but usually around half the price.

My problems with 400's

Expensive for what they are most are 10-20 years old and people are still paying prices of a 3/4 year old 600 for them.

More difficult to repair due to getting parts and the V4 engines of some of the Hondas.

When all is said an done you good probably could buy a modern 600 and insure it for the same if not less what a good condition 10 Y O 400, the 6 will have more power weigh less and probably handle better.

They have that fuzzy old bike feel (I'm sure yours dont mind), I don't know weather they where like this when new or just go that way but they don't have the clean crispness of a modern bike, it's hard to explain bike things like the snap of the throttle and the solidness of it.

Yep I agree 100% with that.

I might be persuaded to drop the price a bit too...

You won't find a non import NC30, and there are definately NO non import NC35's.

Not sure on the CBR, but as G says £2k is a lot to spend on your first big bike.

i think 400s are a bit old now yet overpriced for what they are.

Fine if you know how to fix them when they go wrong, or have a friend who can, but otherwise, you would be better off getting a ten year old thundercat for £1500 which wont have done as many miles as a 15 year old 400.

A 600 will be better on the motorway too.

Having said that, marjays 400 looks quite good for the price. Not as overpriced as some.

while i agree to a point nothing irritates me more than 400 owners who claim to be more skillful than people with bigger bikes because they choose to stick to a 400 or were too shit to apprectiate a 1000 on the road
bollocks, and you are talking through your hole if you think you are using it to its limits all the time as well, if you were you would be falling off pretty much all the time
if you pushed like people do on the track racing you would be dead fairly fast
what u can do is use more throttle, that is all
if you prefer them that is one thing, but as with craig above dont be an arse about it, sure dont you spend more time polishing than riding?

id recomend you go for a 600 of some description. not because im 400ist but because a 400 is a very small bike for taking pillions and motorway journeys. yes i know it can be done but the extra mass is nice.
