right lads long story short...

i had problems with my CDI aka Coil and the wire was part of the box, my mate desided to rip the wire off rendering the unit useless..

i ordered a new one and it came today but its like... twice as big?!

mine looks like this...

https://i8.ebayimg.com/01/i/000/bd/a1/df13_1_sbl.JPG

yet this new one has 2 connections on the top and is masssive compared to mine???

what should i do? as i dont think i can get hold of my original one? apparently those are from the earlier tublier frame models?!?!

or can i just run the one iv got? the main problems i have there is the 2 mounts dont line up i can only mount the unit on one of the mounts on the frame i cant seem to get it to spark either?!

help Neutral

Whoa. Step back!

Your CDI is not your coil. They are two separate things (though some smaller bikes have them built into the same physical unit). The coil is usually connected to the CDI by a single, small wire. A CDI will generally have 3 or 4 thin wires going to it and no thick wire.

That's a picture of a coil. Coils and CDIs are matched, so if you have another coil that's clearly physically different, there is some risk of blowing up your CDI if you connect them together. You'd need to measure the resistance of the coil to be sure.

Do you have a picture of the thing you were sent? maybe it's a combined coil/CDI???

If I were you, I'd try harder to fix your old one - may involve some cutting. I never understood those moulded in leads.

thanks for the info, yes i was going to try and use the old one by screwing a wire into the part where the old wire went into it then put a convensional ht lead onto the end of the screw once hacked off then solicone it all up and hope for the best but the garage told me that it will not work?!

I've done that before, works fine. Cut the head off a screw and sharpen it so you have a two pointed screw, one end goes into what's left of the old one and then new HT lead and cap onto the other end. As you say, the problem then is getting enough mechanical support and electrical insulation around it to stop it arcing out at the join.

The other thing you can do is cut away enough of the coil casing to reveal the root of the HT lead.

I hope your pictures are blurry otherwise I've just lost what's left of my eyesight Smile

1. Stick something in the spark plug hole. Small screws have a strange attraction to it, and you've no idea how annoyed you'll be when that happens Smile

2. Looks like the replacement is a coil, good guess that the extra black wire is an earth. But, still, you are in danger of killing your CDI, so if you don't know how to measure all the relative coil resistances (including that extra wire) I wouldn't risk it.

3. I hate to say this, but is the "unknown" wire supposed to go onto the spade on the coil? You coil should have 3 connections - One Earth (maybe through the body), one low tension (the spade) and one high tension (the spark plug) wire.
