Chain / Bearing woes

Firstly, im shockingly bad at anything mechnical so please imagine you are talking to an 8 year old if you choose to reply to this post. Thank you please.

Got new front and rear tyres a few weeks / 300 miles or so ago and after a while i heard and felt what i thought was my chain loose when i pulled away in 1st. Had a look and it was slackish but not too bad but it was annoying me so following my haynes manual i adjusted the chain very slightly.

It is now a bit tighter, perhaps a little tight but just about at the minimum amount fo freeplay (30mm).

Now its making even more noise when i pull away in first, clattering etc and it feels like its grating / grinding, I can feel it trough the pegs, ive slackened it off a tiny bit but its still doing it and its quite loud and unerving to be honest.

Is the chain fooked or just too tight or does it sound more like a bearing has gone? I mean its not that tight, you can hear it bounce when you go over a decent bump in the road.

Hi

Normally I would say the chain would be the most likely cause. Check for any tight spots.

However given you say you have checked the chain and you have just had new tyres then I would be checking the rear wheel bearings.

The sprocket carrier has a bearing of its own and then there is a spacer between the bearing in the sprocket carrier and the bearings in the wheel. If this spacer goes missing then there is nothing supporting the bearing from one side. Normal ball bearings are not that good at coping with a sideways load so tend to rapidly fail when this happens.

Check quickly as this can have nasty effects. You may feel the extra play, and might find the sprocket is a lot closer to the swinging arm than it should be. Could possibly be touching (and if it is don't ride the bike until you have sorted it).

Ive probably just ballsed up adjusting the chain. Althought he bearing idea does make more sense. Meh, im not to be trusted with mechinical devices.

Looks like im on the train to work until i can get it to a garage

SMD tyres in Leigh, all they do is motorcycle tyre fitting so i think its more likely that ive done something when doing the chain than they have whilst fitting the tyre.

Yeah ive never had problems with em before but thinking about it this did all start the weekend i got the tyres changed :/

I used SMD tyres in leigh once too, they were great. Knocked a price of my 50 tyre.
