The eggy/sulphur smell is hydrogen given off by the battery when charging. By boiling it dry the plates are probably shorting out and you will have dead cells now.

Unless you have been VERY lucky its time for a new battery.

Now wont be trying that again but is the battery just shot (its been stood for 6 weeks) has the optimate fecked it? or is it something to do with the bike?

Is there still electrolyte in the battery? Is that voltage with the engine off? If so what does it go to with it running? Don't let it run long at all if its high as it may cause you problems.

Ok I think my battery is shot.

I tried to start the bike yesterday and the battery was flat, stuck it on the optimate over night and everything looked fine so I hooked it up and tried to turn it over again.

Bike tries to start, then I hear the solenoid ticking then a little smoke comes off the battery and I can smell sulphor.

Now wont be trying that again but is the battery just shot (its been stood for 6 weeks) has the optimate fecked it? or is it something to do with the bike?

UPDATED:

Multimeter says I'm getting 12.71 volts out of the battery

What you smell is sulfor Shocked (Sulphur) Just because they use sulphuric acid and water as an electrolyte. Laughing Which has sulfur in it.

It should smell like eggs.

If it gets hot it means the regulator is not doing its job of regulating charge. It should cut the charge from the generator when the voltage gets to a set max.

If you charge to max (Volt meter should read 13v) then you only get one or two starts from the battery then it is fcuked. Buy a new battery.
BUT ENSURE THAT THE REGULATOR IS GOOD BEFORE FITTING A NEW BATTERY OR YOU WILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM BEFORE LAST YEAR.

Please refrain from posting in the future too. Confused Very few of us @bcf can deal with the issues raised in a time-slip.

As Walloper said ,but.......if it smeels of bacon its charging at more than 13.8 volts ,smell of chicken? below 11.5 volts, anywhere in between can smell of eggs or cheese flan ,in fact anything that has eggs in the recipe, cabbage smell and is fecked wont hold a charge and volts will be just enough to run a torch Wink

You should still be able to bump start.

I had the exact same problem on my curvy SV road bike.
Reg rec was gone - new one sorted it (having two more SVs sitting in the garage helped, but I eventually got a replacement on ebay for £20).
