Aprilia vs Ducati

Whereas 5 years ago, Ducati would've won hands down, now with the Tuono, RSV, Shiver, Pegaso, RXV, I think Aprilia are really starting to compete with Ducati.

In my opinion, Aprilia are now even standing up to Ducati in the areas it has dominated since the 916:

looks, passion, and following.

IMO Ducati is no longer the automatic choice for someone looking for an exotic V Twin!

Aprilia FTW!!

I'm biased though. I just can't afford insurance on the ducati.

I do think Aprilia is well on the way to being a true competitor, they just need to increase their range fractionally.

A 800cc twin sports bike, and the 1000cc V-four that was being bandied about. However I suspect it'll be a 1200cc twin now.

I'd choose a Ducati over an Aprilla any day.

Granted Aprilla have the RSV as a sports bike, but compare that to the 1098 and the Duke wins without question. Compare it to the 998 or 999 and the Duke's are still better.

I'd prefer an SP1 or SP2 over an Aprillia too.

Although Aprilia have come along way, id still go for Ducati everytime
They build so much more of a unique product to Aprilia, the 999 was always better than the RSVR, its only downfall was the price.

I do actually love both makes , just love Ducati more

I really like Aprilias. They appear to make well made, classy, pretty reliable bikes which perform well, road or track. Good prices as well, with an early Mille you're getting a lot of bike for your money.

But I'd rather have a Ducati.

Ducati all the way, only Aprilia that ever really caught my eye was the RST Futura which promptly flopped, I'd still fancy one but the thought of getting parts for it doesn't exactly conjure happy thoughts

I'm not much of a sportsbike person, but I'd still love a 916, 999 or 1098, I've no doubt the RSV is a shit hot bike but it doesn't have that same presence.

Having ridden a few of both makes, I loved the RSVR, and for price it cannot be beat.
But it just isnt as good as the 999, but its still a brilliant bike which id probably buy over the 999 for cost.

The 999 is starting to turn into a bit of a bargin itself now, I assume down to people 'upgrading' en mass to the 1098. Already seen a few well tidy ones going for under 5 grand

The reason I raised the point is because I've started commuting to work on the train.

That means I can have a bike that I really love and can take time cleaning/looking after properly.

And I've always wanted a twin, and especially a Ducati.

But Aprilia is becoming a lot more tempting these days, that's all.....

I've always found the Aprilia's to bulky to benifit the slim v-twin engine setup. Ducati's have always seemed to master the slim chassis for the engine.

Apart from that both look great.

Don't aprilia have guff parts back-up? Surely that would be a reason to stay away from them.

I had thought about the RSV for my next bike but imo, the SP1 ticks a lot more boxes than the RSV does for me.

I had a test ride of an 07 RSVR and the rear brake was useless. The rear brake lever had no feel to it and it made no difference to the speed and i had an extended test ride so i put a good few miles on it

Aprilia parts seem variable. I had parts from a local dealer within little time, and that was for a bike that was 15 years old (I supplied the parts list ). Half the dealers seemed to just ring another dealer instead of going direct (at the time Aprilia dealers could log on directly and order online, but most didn't seem to).

Seems strange that Ducati has the tart factor. When Aprilia appeared they were the ones putting the effort into design and general tart factor while Ducati were stuck in the stone age (other than the Paso) with the kind of image that is these days reserved for riders of old Guzzis.

I love the aprilias, especially the RSVR and im sorely tempted to get one this summer (when my licence restriction expires), as the second hand values arent too bad, and I love the looks on the newer model ones.

Thats why I voted aprilia, being realistic which what Id probably buy for the money Ive got.

But in my fantasy world - getting a brand new bike - Ducati. There again im probably biased in that situation with a new bike, my nearest aprilia dealership is a shed 15 miles away, whereas my nearest ducati dealership is a 2 min walk down the road.
