Hi guys,

Helping a mate out and riding his new SV650 home for him tomorrow (New to him) as he's not passed his test yet as I'm insured on any bike TPO.

Only problem is, what happens if I crash it? Reckon the ins company will let me go fully comp for a day? The problem I've got is that I really want to help my mate out but I've got nowt to gain and lots of money to lose.

You're only insured on any bike if that bike is insured. Has your mate done that?

I'll get in touch with the insurance tomorrow, wonder if the previous owner is still insured on it? Wink

It states on my policy I can ride any other motorcycle providing I have the owners permission. I specifically asked them if the other bike had to be covered by another policy and they told me no.

i enquired about this (but for cars) in random banter the other day. Seems that the vehicle must be insured by someone else for your insurers to cover you.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=138554

Apparently all vehicles need to be insured if used on a public road.

I think JohnnyGSXR's point was that its illegal to have an uninsured vehicle on a public road, hence for your TP to apply it needs to be insured anyway to be allowed on the road in the first place. From the looks of things theres different interpretations in the wording of the laws as well as the insurance policys that you can try argue though.

I'd say if the guy is still insured technically you'll be ok. Just if you hit someone obviously it'll be your insurance that takes the hit.

Same with my policy. I am sure there is no law stating that a vehicle must have a policy specific to it for it to be used on the road, otherwise motor traders policies wouldn't work, as they don't have to ring up and insure every vehicle they get in (whether they're insured/owned by anyone or not). As long as you are insured to ride it that's that.

As for them insuring you fully comp, not unless you pre-arrange it, hence it being TPO on other bikes, not FC on other bikes.
