I remember reading that a few members on here are into or are getting into their running. Just wondering if anybody is training towards any events or anything and how they are getting on?
I've been working on general fitness for the last month and tomorrow will be the first day of a proper training plan towards the Great Manchester Run which is a 10km event. Only 15 weeks left for me.
Also im toying with an idea of signing onto running for a charity but i dunno which one as im generally not normally arsed about them (read selfish ). Any suggestions? or to bother at all? ____________________ I kills hondas

I used to do a lot of running, mainly long distance stuff, not Marathon distance, max of about 10-15km cross country mainly, I also used to do upto 400m sprinting and attended national finals at Croydon several years running (never won any of those though). However I gave it all up about 6years ago after I broke my foot and just never got back into it.
Although I'm not exactly fat and unfit i'm nowhere near the level of fitness I used to be and have decided that I'm going to take it up again. I just hope it'll make me feel a lot better and get me out of what I can see as possibly being a bit of a downard spiral health wise if I don't do something now. There's plenty of country to run across where I live avoiding running on roads so in the next few weeks plan to start squeezing some time in before work in the mornings just to see how unfit i've got |

I jus started running again a couple of weekends back now that the weather (in terms of light) has picked up and I'll be able to go running in the evenings .... sadly though I now have shin splints so can run about half a mile before keeling over in agony
I still played 90 minutes of football on sunday though
Runnings good when you get into it, good luck with the training ____________________ Bike - '98 Yamaha YZF600 Thundercat Pics

Im on a 12 week marathon training plan but I havent got the time plus im carrying a slight knee injury so progress is slower than id have hoped for.
So im going to reduce it to a half marathon plan its week three now and im running 23 minute 5k's and 53 minute 10k's so i have a lot of work to do yet. ____________________ Past: '96 Thundercat, '02 ZX636R (A1P), '58 KTM 690 SM LC4 Current: '06 ZX636R (C6F)

Nah, no specific event but in a months time ill scan for a half somewhere in the area mid to late April, hopefully when its still pretty cool.
Just doing it really as I like running, hope to be a regular charity runner at some point, my previous two attempts were scuppered just when i was getting into good shape once by a bike accident and once by being stabbed in the leg.
I guess its a bit of an inter programme as sunday week 1 was a 75 minute run at 7/10 pace. I could do a half now to be honest but i'd struggle to maintain a pace above 10km p/h.
Im no elite runner at all, I struggle with asthma and my podiatrist said id never be a runner with my feet ____________________ Past: '96 Thundercat, '02 ZX636R (A1P), '58 KTM 690 SM LC4 Current: '06 ZX636R (C6F)

Plenty of 'fun runs' to do all year round of varying distance. Hope to do some when I get myself sorted.
Lady P, visually I probably don't look unfit (thankfully), and physically I don't feel too bad, however I do not feel as fit as I used to, and if I have a quick run now it instantly shows when I get a stitch after about 5minutes I think the main reason i'm not fat is just because although I don't really eat the right stuff, I don't eat much. |

I have never been any good at long distance running at all. Much more of a sprinter myself. I used to be able to do 100m in 11.2 seconds, but that was several years ago and I havent done any proper sprinting since. ____________________ Current: MT-10, Bandit, Grom, GPZ500

I'm supposedly training for tha Royal Marines.
I HAVE TO START TAKING IT SERIOUSLY.
I am actually quite fairly fit and I have no problem pushing myself, I eat healthily and I do get more excersice than most but I still feel I'm not doing enough. Getting better though.
Tha best way to get into fitness training I reckon is just to jump up impulsively one day and say to yourself "I'm going on a short run", nothing to big, just make it managable and fun.
Then do it 2-3 more times that week and you'll start to get into a routine.
I really hate running in tha streets but I did do a 2 mile run down tha main road and back in just under 10 minutes so not bad going.
Running is easy when you find a friend to do it with, especially if you're competitive as it just makes you wanna push harder and harder. Trouble is most of my mates are lazy getz and tha only mate who is suitable to run with (He's a personal fitness coach)
Is always out and not available . |

DidierD. You do not have shin splints. Shin splints is a condition top athletes get from doing too much! You could not possibly develop this condition with two weeks running!
What you are experiencing is the thin layer of muscle between the shin bone and the skin 'burning' because its being used in a way it is unaccustomed to. Much like when you do a bench press and have sore pecs the following day, when you first start running your shins will burn. You have to run through it and it will get better in a couple of weeks.
It probably doesn't happen during footy because your motion will be stop start rather than prolonged like when running for 90 minutes without stopping.
I've done a couple of half marathons. There fun to do and worth the effort. The weight falls of you once you start doing real long distance (anything over 8 miles in my book). Worth doing and you'll enjoy your food more |

As of a weeks time I wanna start doing some running around Coventry, however when I did a few miles last summer, I got terrible joint ache in my right ankle, that actually rendered me useless and I struggle to run much further. I also got that burning sensation on my shins from lack of exercise, I think a lot of it is running on hard surfaces, I need to get some proper decent trainers, but they are quite costly.
However, compared to last summer, I played about 80 minutes of fast 5 a side football every week, where I actually did damage my ankle somewhat, but since it healed up it feels stronger than before, so hopefully running shouldn't be a pain when I start again.
Only thing I don't like is that I will have to run around a city, which isn't actually nice. I suppose I could go to the local country park. I'll drive there the first few times, it is about 5 miles away, then when I start getting used to running longer distances, i'll start running there.
One question, is weight loss quite fast when doing a lot of running? ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Yeah I'd agree with that. Sports like football, that requires lots of explosive speed, sudden halts, severe alteration of body position and footing. Its a perfect recipe to hurt yourself if your not doing any other training and also do not know how to warm up and stretch properly.

Shouldn't make a difference, as long as your outside. You'll always notice something new whilst tabbing around the streets. Thats also the simple joy of running. There's always a training facility at your doorstep no matter where you are.
| Quote: | One question, is weight loss quite fast when doing a lot of running? |
Yes and no. If you push yourself or go long distance then the weight will fall of. 10/20 minutes here and there will do nothing.
You can get a good pair of Mizuno running shoes for about £50. Always buy the last seasons shoe for discount. Lets face it running technology doesn't change radically on a 'fashion cycle'.
Good running trainers is an absolute must though. Your quickly get aches and pains in your knees, ankles etc if your wearing any old jimmies.
I avoid brands like nike and addidas as their really fashion trainers. Adidas are not so bad (in fact I did a fucking lot of running in a pair of adidas) but Nikes are fucking horrendous. |

For those looking at trainers its not just the brand to look at but you also need to consider your foot shape and pronation style. Here is a good guide: https://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=481
I just ran my first sub 50 minute 10km, im chuffed bit sore this morning though!!
Also at the moment im running 40km + a week so id like to think I was in shape but 60 minutes of 5-a-side football put me out of action for 3-4 days!! The high impact excercise really hit my lower back and my thighs hard! But still after the 60 minutes I was the only palyer still running around definately going to include some football / cross-training in my weekly schedule from now though. ____________________ Past: '96 Thundercat, '02 ZX636R (A1P), '58 KTM 690 SM LC4 Current: '06 ZX636R (C6F)

I used to do a bit of sprinting for my local club when I was younger.
Managed a 11.4 100m and a 23.0 200m.
Could never do distance running, so it was all 100/200 & relay etc..
Wish I'd kept at it really but being a typical teenager I lost interest.
