Sounds like it could well be a bad connection on the clutch switch. What bike is it.
Does the engine cut out when this happens?
Does it stay on all the time when the bike is in neutral. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

It's a 1982 CB750 Custom & the problem doesn't affect the running at all. The light is on all the time unless it is in gear with the clutch out |

Unlikely to be the neutral switch causing the problem.
I suspect your clutch switch is duff. There are usually three wires. One connects to earth, one connects to the neutral switch, the third connects to the starter motor relay.
What should happen is when the clutch is out, the relay wire is connected to the neutral switch. When the clutch is in, the relay wire is connected to earth.
It would appear in your case that when the clutch is pulled in, the neutral switch is being connected to earth also/instead. Now you need to find out why.
I'd suggest cleaning the switch first off. Then testing it with a multimeter, then checking it has been connected up correctly and finally checking the wires leading away from it for damage/shorts.
It would be interesting to see if your starter motor also works when in gear with the clutch out (carefully), if it does, there is a good chance someone has connected the switch up incorrectly. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink.
