Could you weld this?

I'm planning on making a rack for my scooter so things are easier to carry round. The tubing used on this wine rack is the perfect size so I thought I could hack it up weld it together so that it will fit my scooter.

If it's not possible where could I buy some tubing?

No. Chrome plating is done after the rack is put together. Unless it's only screwed together. You need to make yourself a rack, then take it somewhere to be chrome plated.

That steel that will be made from is far too thin. I would think it would be about 1mm you need 3mm wall thickness.

thats really not suitable but yes you can weld chrome with a mig, it just spits like a bitch untill you get through the plating, on the other hand you could grind the plating back.

best place for steel tubing = engineers places, ask to raid the offcuts bin.

Cheers
John

Personally, I think it would be a better idea to either get a rack made for your scooter, or get one that you could modify to fit your scooter.

Ebay is a good place to start.

When I bought my scooter there were 2 brackets hanging down which I assume is for a rack. As my scooter was in a breakers yard though (Cat D write off) so someone probably bought the rack.

I've had a look on ebay and I can't find one for my scooter and I've looked at modifying one but I think it will be harder than just getting some steel tubing, welding it so it will fit and then spraying it with some black paint.

if you do a whole rack from scratch there is more to do than if you just bake adapting bracket things that can support a rack not designed for your scooter

often with scooters, one is like another with a different name.

it might be worth finding out if other ones with the same name have racks available on ebay

Here is my design I just made in paint.

That's is what I am looking for. I just think with a bit of tubing it will be pretty easy to make.

I was going to get my dads mate to do it as I don't have a welder and he does.

I was going to get the tubing, cut it to size then ride my scooter to his house and get it welded, fit it and back home.

Of course you can weld metal far thinner than 1mm, that was not my point. A bike rack made of metal that thin would last about as long as a Lifan in the TT.

Ok lets just clairify you can weld thinner than 1mm i've done it and its a bitch to do, you must have exactly the right amps. Trust me i was a welder. Secondly forget MIG go TIG then you can use very little wire and the torch to 'burn in'. TIG is alot neater, if its crome and you MIG it will rust on the first rain. Sand off the crome as the less stuff in the way for imperfections to occour. And decent crome plating costs a bomb go powder coat.
As i stated i was a welder (for Alstom)
cheers

I'm using what ever welder my dads friend has. I'm not bothered if the welds aren't neat. It's for praticality, not looks.

that really does depend on what he's gonna use the rack for, but i would agree it would be more sensible to use thicker tubing than improvise something from a wine rack when for the same price he could get a rack deisgned to use on some other bike that he could improvise to fit his.

He has his idea, he wants to make it work, let him try it and he'll just have to be careful he doesnt overload his winerack based rack.

You can't weld chrome.

If you try and weld 1mm chromed pipe to support luggage on your bike, you fail.

His idea is a bad idea and dangerous.

Forget that pos wine rack and buy some solid mild steel bar and make it from that.

I'm not going to use the winerack anymore. I'm going to do what Virus said and go to an engineering shop and look through the cut offs bin.

If I can't find all the metal I need in the bin could I buy some steel tubing off the engineer?
