So, riding home last night, noticed that the speedo wasn't reeding, checked that the speedo cable was not about to drag or get caught anywhere (it's happily still attached at both ends) had to continue home
New cable on order, assuming it's just the cable that's failed.

Found it strangely liberating riding along not looking at the speedo (no point) even though I was having to guess my speed based on gear + engine speed or other traffic and again this morning.

Anyone else found this?

any advice for keeping my license clean while I wait for my new cable?

Got a smart phone you can use with a GPS app?

Otherwise, in the past I've got used to what sort of rpm is what speed and gone from that.

I'd get stuff apart and check the problem. Could be plenty of bits at fault.

I think, 4k revs in third and you'll be safe in the 30s
4k in fourth and you'll be ok in the 40s

I'll double check when riding home and give you some revs for gears for speed.

Also as for the cable, they snap inside. When mine broke it was still attached but the internals went. 95% it'll be the cable, the other 4.9% the drive on the front wheel. 0.1% ghosts and or aliens

It's fine, you could pass an MOT with no speedo, they have no way of knowing if it works.

Recently I have started taping mine up due to wearing a chest mounted camera which shows my speedo perfectly. So to avoid a hefty amount of editing if something interesting happens I just taped it up. I really much prefer riding this way, it's one less distraction Thumbs Up

I had a speedo cable fall out of my Thundercat and another bike with a smashed up speedo. I just used the speed of whatever traffic was around to calibrate my rev counter, being especially prudent around speed cameras.

A non-working speedo, yes. Need one fitted however.

No Speedo required for a bike MOT, not mentioned in the manual at all.

MOT no, construction and use regulations yes.

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/35/made

Should you get pulled for speeding just don't give them any reason to want to look at your speedo.

You can get a push bike computer / speedo thing for less than a fiver if you want to take (some of) the guess work out of knowing how fast you're going. Thumbs Up

https://www.gearingcommander.com

Use the above site to figure out what revs you need to be sat at, in which gear, to go 'x' speed.

Makes a lot of sense till main speedo is sorted properly, I'd do that for a fiver and enjoy some peace of mind.

Better than a tug\hastle from popo, take it you could possibly argue compliance with construction and use regs ???

I've got a very flexible tester. The requirements for my road legal track bike are horn, speedo and plate. If I go without one of them he will fail it.

I'd not risk going anywhere for an MOT without a speedo, however I may be wrong and willing to admit it. C&U though, got a tug for non working speedo in IoW... Laughing

Follow someone at a set speed and observe your engine revs in top. Hope that they are not a bastard.

He's not that flexible then, at no point do you test a speedo, or fail a bike that hasn't got one.

The only reason I look at one is to note the mileage, because the odometer is normally incorporated in the speedo; if it hasn't got a speedo or an odometer, I just put '0' in the box and it still passes.

You're right when it comes to C&U though.

edit: there's also an option for testing a vehicle without a number plate....

Hi

Speedo failed on one bike, and as a pain to change the cable I rode it using the rev counter and worked out the speed from that in top gear. Did this for quite a while

All the best

That depends on where the MOT test is conducted, here in NI the speedo is tested (at tester discretion) and must be calibrated in MPH and KPH, add-on MPH/KPH stickers on the glass speedo cover are no longer accepted. Taking the MOT aside the cops could take you to the cleaners as regardless of an MOT cert it is illegal to ride without a speedo on a motorcycle exceeding 49cc in capacity.

Halfords cycle speedo about £20 should keep your licence clean, takes about half hour to fit.

Fancy.
I got one for something like £3 from Tescos for my CCM.

As the speed rose, it'd often show exactly half or a third the speed, but that wasn't a big issue as you could easily tell the difference between 50mph and 25mph.
My more expensive cateye one was fine to 150mph (at Snetterton, actually) on the zx9.

I fitted heated grips last winter and the controller is right in front of my speedo. I don't know what speed I'm doing until around 60, so I just make sure I'm going at least that fast Laughing

New cable is here, looks quite short but might just be how it looks

Hopefully get it fitted before Monday

those "your're doing this speed" signs at the side of the road are fairly useful :p
