Wet sanding - less sanding dust as its a slurry as well Smile
although your wet and dry is probably a higher grade. dry papers will be more sensitive, you should probably be using about a 240 to flat primer.

WAY too fine, won't provide enough key for the colour & increases the chances of paint chipping because there's no mechanical bond.

you want to make a good key for the paint to grip to.
so 240 or 180, youll notice it taking primer off, thats good, just take some off all around, and clean it up. the prime is only a undercoat remember, it wont show afterwards.

Put on multiple coats of primer, wet sand that with 400, & guide coat it or you're just pissing in the wind. Add more primer of needed, guide coat it again.
Final sand with 500 & then put the colour on.

In my personal opinion 400 is too fine.
Unlikely hes going to have guidecoat too. seems like a diy job, not a bodyshop Laughing

180/240 is for final shaping of filler.

You're 16, I've been doing this for 30 years.. explain why on earth he's unlikely to have any old rattlecans laying about?
& if he sands the primer with 180/240 his finishe work is going to be full of sand scratches.

Mist coat sprayed on from about 2ft away for contrast when snading to know you got everything sorted.
Any contrasting rattlecan will do as it all ends up on the floor anyway.

Weird when we spray over 240 its perfect,

And the guidecoat, seems i know something else to be guidecoat, we use 3M dry guide coat, which is a powder found at the below link
https://www.levineautoparts.com/3mdryguidecoat.html

Cheers

I've used that stuff, I just prefer the spray kind.

Get the primer sorted.

Start spraying the colour, & if you don;t get any boogers or runs etc just keep adding coats until you have good coverage with no *holidays*
If you fuck it up just knock back that bit.

Then start adding the clear, get 3 coats on, let it dry 24 hours & then hit it with 1200-1500 wet (obviously if you fuck it up knock it back & go at it again etc)

Throw on another 3 coats & repeat with 1500 wet -> 2000 wet & then buff it out

DO NOT!! use T-Crap.

If you get a REALLY big run, wait til it dries & take it off CAREFULLY!with a file. Saves a lot of buggering about with blocks & sandpaper etc... but smooth it out with 1200-1500 wet before continuing

Personally? I use a 9in Dewalt variable speed polisher, start with wool pads, then foam & then finish off with a PorterCable DA with foam pads so the finish has no swirl marks in it...

But that Dewalt has enough power to throw large car parts clear across the workshop if you're not paying attention... With bike parts you need someone to hold em down on the bench.
