Hi,

I have a small dilemma - I want to remove the swingarm to take the chain off (endless), and although I have a paddock stand that's not going to help (something which I realised upon removing the rear wheel - doh!).

In order to do this - is there a centre stand I can get, or has anyone any advice on how to tackle this without the bike falling on it's backside?

Axle stands are a mans best friend.

If its just to take the chain off then just use an angle grinder or chain splitter.

I almost said Abba Stand but Abba stands work on your swingarm bearing mount things, and thus will be of no help.

Perhaps you can tie it from a roof beam which I did for my NTV once , or maybe get a car jack on the engine sump using a piece of wood to prevent the jack making holes in your sump.

If the pegs are solid then use them as jacking points or twist them upside down and then use them

I've a couple of axle stands but I don't think the frame on the ZX will work with that, your bike looks a perfect candidate!

I did think about the rafter idea, along with a jack and wood under the sump, but I'm worried about the whole balance of the bike and I'm not sure my garage rafters are up to the task should things go wrong Wink

I'll have a look tomorrow again and see which options will work - thanks for all the tips!

I did to start with but the whole area around the swingarm into the front are cacked in crap and oil as when I got it they'd fitted an over-zealous scottoiler. Plus I've got to drill out a knackered screw for the rear hugger and I've not the room with the arm fitted.

I've also been told that I should only use an endless chain with the ZX6R - is that true or is my mate talking out of his exhaust?

Endless chains probably means a rivet chain rather than splitlink. Never seen an 'actual' endless drive chain for a bike (though sure they do exist in some form).

The oil and stuff is a protective layer against corrosion so is fine where it is Very Happy Razz.

disc cut or grind the old chain off,use a split link once the new chain is on..rid to your local bike shop and get them to rivet it for ya....5-10 quid max!!!

Good point - never thought of it like that. I think the chain definitely has to go though as I've a feeling it's stretched - when riding at moderate speed there's an odd sound (hard to explain, like a repeating 'yow-yow-yow' which gets faster in proportion to the speed).

Being honest this is probably the biggest thing I've done with a bike so the bravado in me wants to take it apart, but the sensible part is quietly thinking leave it alone! Very Happy

The swingarm removal looks unlikely now though, so I think I'll go the sensible route and just fit a new chain.

If the chain's going, then as above, a grinder, saw or other metal cutting device will be fine in lieu of a proper chain tool.

If you had your location in your profile we could see where you were - if you're near reading, I'm sure we could arrange the use of my chain splitter/riveter.

Thanks for the offer - unfortunately I'm stuck in the fens! There's a couple of good bike garages right near me though, so I'll just pop in there - I'm guessing it'll take all of 5 minutes for them to rivet the join. Cheers!
