Righto

Basically overhauled my front calliper - new seals, good clean out, new pads, braided lines and bled the system today... Bar's tied back overnight as we speak.

Appears to all be working but for one slight issue..

Now I'm not 100% as in the time I've owned this bike the front calliper has either been knackered or sat on my work bench, but...

When wheeling it without the front brake applied, there's a bit, and I mean a bit, it's not VERY noticable, of friction, compared to how it was without the calliper attached.

So presumably this isn't right, so my question is, where have I gone wrong now? Very Happy

It sounds normal to me.
Once you have fitted the caliper back on,the brake pads will be touching the disk.
Not pressing hard on the disk, but just touching it slightly which will feel a little restrictive.

Also if you fitted new pads, they will now need to bed in to the disk.

I always get this problem on the mountain bikes, and it causes problems there ill tell you that!

the best solution if found is to go for a ride and keep on the brakes very lightly for a good distance, or do alot of stop start riding in a city, it'll wear any excess material off and you'll have a good surface on the brakes too =]

I've just done mine and they are the same. After a 30 min ride all is well. Yest they do still sound like they are just tickling the disk, but thats normal. Its when after applying them and you cant move the wheel you have problems.

My brakes drag slightly especially by Friday after 400+ miles of commuting, it's all the crud they pick up. However, even after a rinse down and squirt of brake cleaner there's still a bit, as you say just a bit, of friction there. Thumbs Up

The folly of working through to 1:30 in the morning is that you're no longer the best judge of what a "bit" of friction is.

Was down there earlier doing some unrelated stuff, and I must have been pretty knackered last night and assumed it was down to fatigue, but there's actually quite a lot of friction.

Still a case of bedding in and whatnot? Bike still moves but it's quite a lot of resistence there. Possibly not helped by leaving the lever cable tied back overnight? I'm not sure on this one!

Unable to take it for a test ride just yet as the tank is off being primed etc.

Cheers for responses so far, karma given.

lift the front end up, if you can spin the wheel without it stoping dead within a quarter turn of you letting go, then its ok.

Cheers

id take the pads out, lever the caliper back and bleed it a little bit more, sounds like its got a small ammount of air in it causing a problem.

Cheers

Did you lube the seals up with brake fluid?

Most bikes i've seen your wife would be able to spin the wheel the best part of 360 degrees on her first attempt.

Check also the pad is seated right. Some calipers have grooves or kinks for locating the pad, which if positioned incorrectly can push the pad outwards.

Air in the lines has no effect on holding the pistons on, if anything it does the opposite! The seals return the piston

If the brakes are still binding 90% chance you havnt cleaned the calipers properly. Even if you didnt grease the seals it should turn more than that!
