 Posted: 20:26 - 03 Apr 2008 Post subject: Got a complaint today... |
 |
|
Received a letter today from the local council with regards to excessive motorbike engine noise
I basically start my bike say 7.45-8am on the drive and let it idle for a few minutes until its up to temperature. I dont sit there revving the tits off it, it just sits there.
The micron race can is strictly not MOT fit but its not even that loud...these neighbours complain left, right and centre and last time they called the police on us saying we were throwing eggs at their house!! they're are the local complain-alot's and I knew eventually they would go off on one about the recent biking activities at our house.
I so dont want to make out as if they have won and change my ways...no one else complains...i'm tempted just to push the bike on the road in front of their house and start it there...at least the noise is not coming from our property then
Any ideas of what could happen if the complaints carry on?? ____________________ CBT - 13/01/08 -> Theory 18/01/08 -> Honda Accord Type R sold 02/02/08 -> DAS 19/02/08

Well as bigger p-i-a as they are, do you really need to let it idle so long.
Just start it and ride off, it will soon warm up on the move.
Somethimes it not so much the loud noise, its the pitch its at thats the problem.
Have a word with them and explain that you are not trying to upset them with the bike, and its all legal, that you will limit it as best you can.
I would also ask them why they can't bring their issues to you, instead of going to the council.
We have a guy with a HD near us and he does the same, as much as i love bikes its a p-i-a when he does it at that time in the morning when you are on your day off and trying to sleep. ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

You could always write back saying that as far as you are aware, the noise level is within acceptable limits and invite them to come round to confirm this is the case.
Ball's in their court then, they either have to spend valuable interfering letter writing time checking the noise levels in your neighbours house as you start the bike or STFU.
Write, don't phone. Keep a copy. It shows you are being reasonable. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Buy a commercial sized strimmer (completely legal for domestic use) and start that up at 8am.

Meh,
I like being a prick and a cunt from time to time revving the bike starting up, but i would like to have consideration for my neighbours.
They see me in the weekend washing my bike, adding new bits, fixing stuff, maintaining it ( i live in flats with parking at the back). The last thing i want to do is piss them off.
Now my full system is anything BUT legal , i agree it's loud. My neighbours are also pretty old, a few of them a nosey cunts and used to complain a lot when my landlord first moved in about different manner of things, but they're also pretty vigilant - in which case if i'm a good boy, it swings on my side. They look out for the bike in the back yard etc, generally asking how things are going. The fact that i extend common courtesy to them by not starting it in the back yard makes our relationship much more enjoyable and friendlier. I would think it would be different if i put it on choke for 1 min, let it idle for another min whilst i put my gloves and lid on, then drove off.
What i do is I come downstairs fully kitted up, remove the disk lock, cover and chain, wheel the bike to the front (through the entrance passageway from the car park), put it on choke, start it and ride VERY slowly away - keep revs below 3k - the choke is set at about that rev range anyway, so all i need to do is let out the clutch. Once i'm clear of my street, choke off and keep revs low. That way the bike is level meaning you don't get deprivation of oil in the rightmost cylinders which is what would happen if you left it on the stand. I'd get pissed off myself if i got woken up every 7:45 cos i wanted to hear my IL4 idling for 3 mins in the back of my house day in day out!
It's pretty painless and all i do is piss off the bakers down the road ... no neighbours annoyed. ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1

Do a burnout on their drive!
Why not just start it in gear. No damage to the gears then as you aren't having to engage the gear with the increased idle speed.
Start it in gear, ride off, problem solved.
They are designed to be ridden from cold anyway, just keep it below 1/3 revs until it's warmed up. ____________________ My Flickr

My neighbors forever bitched about my rf starting even when it had a stock can and was quieter than the old mans diesel that used to moan.
Well one night the lads showed up on the bikes.
11pm, 5 bikes with race cans revving the tits off to get me to come out side. Windows every where vibrating, dogs barking the lot.
Needless to say the whole street was out and looking.
No one complained about my bike after that ____________________ ◙◙► K6 GSXR 600 ◄◙◙◙◙► K5 GSXR 1000 ◄◙◙◙◙► K5 GSXR 600 ◄◙◙◙◙► 96 RF600r ◄◙◙
