hiya folks,
first time posting here; ive got an 82 cg125 pre japanese model with awsome 6v lights and drums front and rear. after being assured from the seller there would be no probs (ahahahahah....) ive so far replaced the exhaust with an after market from dave sivers and replaced the nonexistant airfilter. the bike now vibrates quite a bit and there is soot on the exhaust after 2 weeks of having it on. im pretty sure the bike only runs on full choke (doesnt appear to be smoking btw) but i need to know is full down on the lever on (this is the position it runs) or off. ive been told on the brazil models its the opposite so hense the question as i need to know before i start peeing about with the mix/throtle screws etc. also what could the vibes be? im guessing it might be the valves need doing posibly. the other thing is theres a small amount of petrol the leaks when the bikes off. i just turn the tap off but is this normal?
thanks for any advice guys Very Happy

It vibes cos its a single cylinder bike, just a little thumper. to find out what is on or off just take your carb off and look... Thats what i did. On brazil ones like mine down is off and fully up in on but my bike only likes it on half to start then fully off it will idle all day long.

hiya matey and thanks for the reply,
thing is it wasnt vibrating before with the old oe exhaust and there wasnt any soot. to be fair its doing 100mpg and runs to 65mph so its doing what it should but the crap on the exhaust is a bit worrying which is why im guessing its running on full choke and the carb mix and thottle stop screws might need adjusting to get it to run with choke off (assuming the choke is on anyway?!?)
cheers

Take your plug out and what does it look like? That will tell you if the mixture is correct.
When i had my first CG it vibed all the time, is it making horrible noises? maybe you didnt notice the vibes before hand. If you can see if everything is tight.

Choke lever on an 82 bike is up for on down for off- should have 3 settings, off at the bottom, half on and then fully on as you move it up. Mine (another '82) needs 1/2 choke to start from cold then runs fine with it off.

6v leccie's and drums suck dont they Laughing

thats excellent info, thanks so much.
does seem strange that the bugger only runs with choke off though. means ive never needed to use the choke even when its been cold in the morning but heyho it works (and it doesnt run at all on choke?!?). i havent run it since the airfilter arrived this morning so there might not be any probs with the bike
cheers guys

if it ran fine with a nackered exhaust and no air filter, then when you put these in its going to change the fueling mix drastically, get the air filter in, run the bike up through the rev range whilst on a road, if there are any 'stumbles' where it seems to bog down or hold back then keep it in that section for as long as you safely can, then clutch it in and kill the ignition and coast to a stop somewhere safe.

then post up a picture of the spark plug.

Cheers
John

cheers John,
ive done a plug chop today and its looking a bit black but not horrendously so but while im here anyone know where to locate the mix and throttle stop screws? i thought it'd be obvious but heyho never underestimate my ineptitude. there was two screws side by side behind a cover on rhs (one crosshead holding the throttle cable to the carb on left and one flathead on the right). the one on the right makes it rev higher/lower but the phillips one just seems to be holding a spring and the cable and doesnt appear to do anything. im assuming the right one is the mix screw?!? but whats the left. haynes manual is useless for this bike btw
cheers

the throttle cable comes into the top of the carb on these ones, if you look on the carb body, on the top part where it looks like a tube there should be a screw, this adjusts the idle.

any screw holding a cable (choke more than likely) is only there to hold a cable.

the pilot air screw adjusts the mixure, but only at idle speeds, this can be found on the bottom of the carb on the edge closest to the engine.

any other mixture adjustment is done by changing jets and needle height.

was it running badly at any point through the rev range?

Cheers
John
