After owning a few different bikes with peaky power delivery i decided i wanted something different. I went for the SRX as it looked to be a good commuter and distance bike with some character. Bought on ebay for £450.

https://users.aber.ac.uk/mrb6/SRX/right.jpg

The bike was low milage, had brand new tires, K&N filter and an aftermarket road legal exaust system, but had been stood for 8 years.

After many hours spent trying to get it to start i discovered it had a blocked pilot jet and as a result wouldnt run below 3k rpm. That problem fixed i started to ride the thing. From very early on it was pissing out oil. After many hours checking various seals i discovered the oil was actually coming from the airbox Confused The crank case breather was spitting out loads of oil. The bike also strugged greatly to get to 70mph. I concluded this meant that the rings were worn and that it would need a strip and top end rebuild.

The side stand was attached to a section of lower frame that had to be removed to get the engine out, so carefully the bike was placed on its side.

As usual most of the exaust studs were totally fucked, 3 out of 4 sheering off, the other unscrewing the whole stud.

https://users.aber.ac.uk/mrb6/SRX/DSC00261.JPG

The Top end was removed and cleaning began.

https://users.aber.ac.uk/mrb6/SRX/DSC00260.JPG

The standard barrel size as a 96. This one has a liner in it marked 97. What do you guys think to the state of the barrel & Piston?

Going to get it bored out to a 98 & get a new Wiseco piston bumping the engine from a 608cc @ 8.5:1 to 633cc @ 10.5:1.

The bike has a dry sump with oil cooler and external oil tank. Inspecting the crank case showed it was FULL of oil. I think i've drained 3 litres out of it! Confused

https://users.aber.ac.uk/mrb6/SRX/DSC00263.JPG

No idea quite how the case has acumulated that much oil but i suspect either the oil pump is fucked, or the oil strainer is blocked. Inspecting these will envolve splitting the crank case, which first requires the removal of the flywheel, something i am definatly struggling with! Any tips or diagnosis would be apreciated.

Sorry I can't help you with the issues the bike has, but it looks a nice bike. It slightly reminds me of the Yamaha SDR200

Flywheels are a bugger. In the past I've used a claw puller.

The trick is to get a decent amount of tension behind the puller then smack it with a hammer and shock it off.

Have you got a haynes manual for it?

My vote is for a Kenny Roberts themed Cafe racer.

Nice job!

For the piston rings, I'd get a piston ring compressor, although you can do it with a steady hand. It's one of those tools you'll buy once, but have forever more just sitting on a shelf waiting for you to next need it.

And you can re-cover seats yourself, but they'll normally look crap. So I'd get it done by a pro, especially if you want the hump put in.

Go to a local upholsterers, needn't be a specialist seat place.

Initially i effectively had a non runner as it took up to an hour to get it started, then it ran like a bag of arse. I've not started work yet so have plenty of free time. So far i've spent about £100 on it and now have a mechanically sorted bike that starts first kick.

Clip on's are on order along with a master cylinder repair kit, fork seals and mirrors. Going to polish it up, respray it and have a bike that is then worth double what i paid for it Laughing

Is the exhaust the Predator type? And is it the complete system including the down pipes. It is a smart bike.

Yes its a predator road legal system. The down pipes slot into it under the bike. My down pipes are stainless steel so i think i have the whole system. You could probably get the end can and cut down your original down pipes to fit?

The can sounds nice and deep for a legal system.

Hang on, you only replaced the dust seals or replaced the oil seals as well?

Either way, you've made me shit jealous and want to buy another non runner and strip apart and rebuild.

Top job mate, looking forward to seeing the paint Thumbs Up Karma
