PostPosted: 23:09 - 30 Apr 2008    Post subject: I'm after a McJob. Reply with quote

So my last exam is in about three weeks, leaving me with 4 months of free time and no money, I was planning on hitting the ground running in regards to sorting something out and was planning on phoning round places next weekish, asking if they're after CVs so I can get some interviews as soon as I'm back.

After setting my expectations a bit low a couple years back, I've realised just how easy it is to walk into min wage type work, and ended up with probably the worst job, 'crew member' at Embarassed McDonalds (yes, thats the official job title) I have my old job still open to me anytime I want which is a nice safety net.

First thing I'll do when I get back is walk into Hein Gericke and ask if they're hiring, cos that'd be ideal. But other than that what chain stores are the best to look at, When I was first looking for a job I assumed all the shelf stacking, till monkey stuff was all min wage, but I know some places pay a bit more, which adds up, I also know mates who found getting days off a lot easier, or harder than me, and stuff like that tends to be done according to policy, so your experiences may apply to my local branch.

I'm not limited to high street chains/supermarkets mind, in fact I would love to do something more interesting, just since I'm only doing it for four months any kind of real job probably wont be interested in me.

Ta BCF life advice types Thumbs Up

You in Plym or the sticks? your phone doesnt work spaz.

If I was going somewhere for a staff discount it'd be a supermarket anyway, last 12 months I've spent £0 on electronic toys, stuffs cheaper on ebay anyway.

Try a temp agency, look in the newspapers for stuff like temp office worker, temp admin, etc, they pay better than shelf stacking jobs, if that fails, than just go around the supermarkets, asking for vacancies, i did this when I left college, and most of the time, they just give you an application form.

DONT become a full time barman, whatever you do Laughing Laughing , but a pub job is very good as a second job

I'd say you've left it a bit late for casual work! But then again I had to find a job where there are pretty much none, luckily a local hotel chain were looking for bar staff in a summer recruitment drive so I work there during the summer.

Bit late? I wont be availible to work/sit interviews for 3-4 weeks.

Ta for the temp agency tip, hadn't thought of that, supose theyre after experience rather than qualifications, though I have neither really Mr. Green I'm pretty good in interviews though, worth a shot anyway.

Lass was telling me on MSN that her friend who works weekends at waitrose just got a 1000 quid bonus Confused , seems a bit bollocks to me, but apparently they pay a fair bit over min wage, one for the shortlist I think.

Like I said it's probably due to where I live, you try finding a job in a place like the dump I come from. In a city you have loads of options. I got my job secured in March last year and I know many uni people who didn't work throughout the summer as they couldn't find one. Smile

Know how you feel Jon, when I first turned 18 I lived in a village 20 miles from anywhere (with 'anywhere' being Scunthorpe) with busses in every two hours, which finished at about 6, if that's not the middle of nowhere I dont know where is.

Since my cash'll mostly be going on petrol anyway I'm gonna be looking at anywhere within about 60 odd miles, which covers Doncaster, Lincoln and Scunny, should be able to find something.

Dunno if there are any offices in Scunthorpe actually, if there are they certainly dont make a song and dance about it.

When you're on the HG website, look for the "About Us" or the "jobs" links.

Surprising what you find when you look beyond what you are looking at.

I was on the Royal College of Arts website the other day, looking up an exhibition, and I clicked on their jobs section, found an interesting admin one that I might just apply for Cool Thumbs Up

Itchy, I think he's going home for the summer and wants a job there- having to pay accomodation down here wont help him earn some pennies.

All I have to say is: don't work for the co-op. They dont pay much and they are a bitch when it comes to wrangling time off.

'bout the same as I get then. I was never a supervisor 'cos they don't get paid any more and I cant be bothered with the extra responsibilities such as dealing with angry customers.

I'm going back this summer, because I get on well with most the staff and customers, know how it all works there etc, but if it was Maccy D's I'd deffo be looking for another option Laughing

Pizza hut/dominos delivery is a good laugh, especially if you know the town quite well already.

I'm a Morrison'er Sad
Hate it, Have been put forward to become supervisor but don't want it, because of the extra responsibility and the no extra money. Long hours I get 4.84 which is alright since min wage for 17 is 3.30 (i think anyway).
Bonus usually is only when you've worked there for a certain time, ours is 1 year. Its not worth it.
God I need to find a apprentiship.

Cheers, thats exactly the sort of thing I was after, food delivery sounds like it could be a laugh as well, wonder if they'd let me use the CB Thinking that would be considerably more fun than a clapped out c50.

Tried HGs site hellkat, but I couldnt see a jobs link, I'll just pop in as soon as I get back, I'm pretty sure they wont have anything going tbh, good luck with the RCA thing Thumbs Up

Reckon you can sell?

I work in Comet. You get a low wage to start with but if you're good at selling you can make a nice little extra with their version of commission. And after 3 months you can start using your 10% discount on anything, TVs, PS3s, laptops etc.

at the Pizza hut I work at you have to use their peds, but it's a franchise thing so you might be able to wrangle something with the manager as long as you can fit the bloody massive box on your bike. It's minimum wage but tips can total a fair bit.

I work in the warehouse at Currys (oh joy), I just handed a CV into the manager one day then they rang me a week later asking if I was still looking for a job. £5.52 an hour but if the store does well and hits/goes through targets you get some nice bonuses. The manager at my branch is a "live for my job" type though which means he expects everyone else to be the same and thinks it's fine to change the rota as and when he feels regardless of if you've got plans or not. I think working in big shops like Currys or Comet depends on what kind of people the managers are, if they're laid back then great but if not you can get a lot of hassle trying to get time off or swapping shifts for doctors appointments etc.

The supervisors/managers at my place are plebs though, they have no trouble messing everyone around and generally being idiots to everyone and seem to enjoy flexing what tiny amounts of power they have over people. I'm sort of half looking for something else but I know untill i get myself sorted with a driving licence then I'll be hopping from one crappy job to the next.

If you can drive then there's loads of other options open to you, well, there are where I live anyway (North Wales).

You then are a deadly rival, I work in the warehouse too Razz Everything you said though basically applies to Comet too, the team bonuses, the rota being changed willy-nilly, the comment about management etc.

But there is definitely something to be said for team performance bonuses and a commission system if you're looking to earn a decent wage. I occasionally do sales, and although I work 20 hours a week i'm contracted for five, so any sales I do actually get me a good bonus because it's based on your contracted hours.

After spending most of yesterday outside in the gorgeous sun I've decided that I'm only willing to do shop floor work at places I would actually enjoy spending time, it's so depressing working in some squalid hellhole full of screaming kids and people too stupid to breath when you can see the sun pouring down onto the pavement yards away. It'll take a fair bit longer to find something, but I'd forgotten just how depressing parts of last summer were.

And blimey, I didnt know electronics shops actually used a commision system, thats a massive no no for me, cant stand the hard sell stuff (to gain promotions at McDs you have to 'suggestive sell' stuff, ie "is that a large meal" ugh, hate it)

I love giving the hard sell as it is so easy it's cringeworthy. Spout off random crap and quite often your typical consumer will suck it all in. That's how the system works.
