A few years back I nudged a bollard and not really been too bothered by it but I want the car to look A1 for flogging to Joe Public.

Went to a crash repair garage but got turned away as I will be paying for it not loosing more NCB on it. Off to next garage and I had to pay £30 for a simple quote? I will of course get this back if I have the work carried out by them. Fecking swizz if you ask me!

The damage:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/02052008346.jpg

The bloke took a few pictures, scribbled on a tatty not pad and stood in silence. Asked me if I had any idea at the cost as he 'had no idea'. After another 30 seconds of ass scratching he replied with the quote.

What do you think the quote was?

£200 Confused

I know absolutely nothing about bodywork repair. If it's cheaper than the quote the guy gave you I could have a bash at it Laughing

They do according to the adverts don't they.

Both the Halfords near me have ditched their garage sections so not sure where they do actually do it?

So have our local halfords, however they are still advertising it in store. I think they have bought out a 'chip'n'dent' mobile company type thing.

Have a look

Yeah the 75% less than the bigger garages seems somewhat appealing as the quote for 'repair' was...

...£600

I asked what it involved and he said 'just a repair, paint and labour'

Looking at that I'd say around £300 mark, as red is a pain in the ass of a colour to match. Plus he'd have to pull as much of the dent out as possible and then fill it. Looks as if you have damaged two panels there, albeit 1 ever so slightly so it may cost that bit more.

Very slight scratching to passenger door as well, so treated as 2 like you said. The actual dent is not that deep at all, quite shallow in fact but would need to be hammered out.

Its still not £600 of damage though, I used to work in a body shop when I was going an NVQ, and we'd have charged about £300 for that job.

Go get a few more quotes. As it doesn't look much of a job that to be honest.

Certainly not going to accept the quote, but won't be too impressed if all the garages charge £30 for a damn quote.

Don't mind paying a few hundred for it, but £600 is like a figure to imply that they can't be bothered but pay over the odds if you want.

Sorry can't help with guessing the price of repair, but charging for a quote seems a right con.
Just seems like they charged you for a quote then gave a really high price in the hope you'd say yes to get your £30 back.

If they want your business then surely they can spend 5 mins working out the cost of there materials and labour for free.

A number of larger repair places charge for quotes, Basfords have done it forever, in a number of cases its the only money they will make on it since the back street places always undercut them for non insurance work.
I'd have guessed £600-£700 simply because that what I got quoted for my wifes metallic silver A3. The main reason for the price is the paint. They have to guarantee the repair for a fair amount of time so the preference is to spray the entire panel to ensure a good colour match, probably the door as well.

A small repair shop will fix it for about £300, they couldn't care less what it looked like next week let alone next year.

He want's to charge £600 because it's gonna take a shit load of painting skills to match the orange peely look of the paint that's on there now. Laughing

Absurd money, place who's respraying the front and rear of my car would do it for about £80-100 i'd guess, including the paint. I had ridiculous quotes when you start going to the big, proffessional looking places, you just have to find a little bodyshop with a good reputation or work you can see being done.

wth..

i had a worse ding that on the rear arch of my old civic and i had a bumper to get resprayed.. to get both done it was 250 quid - and it was a good job.

600 quid sounds like a major ripoff to me.

That's what i was thinking,my local body shop would do that for about £60...
As for the red paint being a hard one to match??
I have allways found red one of the easiest colours to match,it just means you have to pay the extra £30 for a full machine polish on the rest of the car,so the new paintwork blends in.
I have done bigger jobs than that myself, and got it looking perfect afterwards.(got pics somewhere to prove it aswell Wink )

That looks like a flat red colour to me? I know our repairer would charge £180 plus VAT. as it involves two panels that need paint, and filling... what garage did you go to, bodgit and scarper Laughing

Thats Honda build quality that is.

The paint on the bumpers is paper thin and scratched so easily.

Smashed the front end of my car, needed quit a lot of work doing behind the scenes as it where and that came to a grand total of the quote for a dent repair.

When he said he would charge for a quote, why did you agree?

Personally i would have laughed in his face and said fuck off, then walked out.

£600 for that pissy thing, would take a proffessional less than half a days labour plus allowing for drying time.

Girlfriends grandads TT was reversed into and put a huge dent in the wing and scraped the door, cost of repair for that was £650 and that was by an authorized Audi repair place and included a new wing.

Without a quote I wouldn't of known how much to expect, silly I know.

I was certainly in 2 minds just to walk out but as I thought it may be a few hundred I coughed up. Wish I hadn't now!

Quite true, I can't paint badly enough to match factory finishes..

As for the job in question.... to get it to the "inviisble repair" stage would require painting both doors & clearing the entire side of the car to get the blend to disappear..

& red is the most expensive colour....

Still, 600quid is quite cheap compared to the paint job in my thread about the Mustangs...
