Afternoon all, just a quick question regarding MOT test. Basically I've got a bike that has ABS but the light is constantly on meaning there is a fault. I have taken out the bulb so no more abs light but is this an mot fail?

The brakes work ace, all the pads are excellent as are the discs...

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi

Would be a fail for a car, and would expect it to be a fail for a bike although it is not listed in the (out of date) manuals online.

Entirely possible that riding the bike with the ABS not working would be regarded as an offence of "Using a vehicle with defective brakes" - CU10, upto £2500 fine and 3 points.

All the best

Keith

Quick question - are you sure it's the ABS. From what I remember BMW use the ABS warning light to signal other fault conditions. Maybe worth checking.

Indeed, on mine it also lets you know if the brake/tail light bulb has blown.

Cheers for the responses its definitely a problem with the ABS system. Any MOT testers can shed light on this, is it down to their discretion seen as the test criteria doesn't mention it?

Hi

The manuals online are not up to date unfortunatly.

Even if the bike passes there are legal issues (can think of a case from 20 years ago where someone was prosecuted for faulty brakes because a traffic light camera snapped them going through with locked wheels on a car with standard fit ABS).

All the best

Keith

Seems a bit crazy to me that it could fail for something that is not essential.

If the brakes work perfectly fine I can't see what the problem is. It'd just be like any other bike that didn't have ABS brakes Confused

Quite possibly they don't. The warning light could be there to say the system is leaking fluid internally when under pressure.

And legally they are faulty.

All the best

A bike without a warning light could have that problem but if it passes the braking test on the M.O.T it would pass the M.O.T all together right?

ABS isn't part of the bike test yet. You should advise the presenter of a fault in the ABS,but as long as the brakes meet the required standard like a non-ABS model, then no problem.

Passing the MOT and being road legal are 2 different things.

Also worth noting if its a BMW the ABS light wont go out if the battery doesn't have enough charge in it to start the ABS pump.
